Oh wow. Having a child that sick/close to death is the worst feeling ever. I hope he can completely recover and will be praying for him and your family.

Without getting into the conversation about vaccines, I just wanted to share a brief story of gratitude, thankfulness and caution about this year’s flu. 10 days ago, my 2 year old son, woke up from his nap with a 102.2 fever and a red face. He definitely was quiet, not feeling great, not eating much.  We have a 5 week old as well and my wife was feeding her on the couch, while our 2 year old was on the opposite end of the couch watching Mickey Mouse on Disney. He was leaning over and we thought he was going to nap, but thankfully my wife, the surgical nurse noticed something was off and called his name twice. He didn’t respond so she yelled at me to come over quickly from the cooking in the kitchen. I lifted his head up, he was completely limp and his eyes rolled to the back of his head. He started acting like he was choking so we called 911 immediately got a dechoker, but his jaw was locked tight. After about 30 seconds, we got his mouth open for the dechoker.. Nothing was blocking his airway. He turned completely blue/purple so my wife had to put him on the ground and start CPR because he wasn’t breathing and we didn’t feel a pulse. Three rounds of CPR and during the second one, I had to run to the closet to get the AED we keep in the house. After the third round, he started breathing very slightly and fighting it a little as the EMS rushed in the house. They jumped in, AED, epi followed by versed.  Got him stable enough to transport. During transport had to intubate, start two IVs, but they got him to the hospital. Once there, they were able to do ct scan and didn’t see any brain damage nor serious heart damage, but believed he needed to be life flighted down to Rainbow babies.. which they did. Rainbow babies did their thing, got him stable and improving and did lots of tests, but kept him with us when we thought we were losing him.

They don’t know for sure what caused such a serious event, but the combination of Flu A, Flu Myositis and a febrile seizure and the commentary from all the doctors including neurologists was that this year’s flu is wreaking havoc to all ages, especially children. I think part of this is just helping to say what happened to deal with the shock, but part of it is just sharing how bad the flu is and everyone taking extra precautions could possibly help just one person avoid an event like this is worth it. So especially if you have kids, be smart with food, sleep and washing hands this year. If there’s a fever, please keep a close eye on them this year.

When my son was about 4 we went through something very similar.  I was laying in bed with him beside me watching TV. He had what looked like a cold and didnt feel well.  Anyway after a few minutes I found him completely unresponsive which scared the crap out of me. I called for my wife to come in and told her to call 911.  That was moving too slow so I carried him to the car and my wife and I took him to the emergency room.

Long story short the doctor told us he had had a febrile seizure which really is not rare at all.  They gave hime some childrens tylenol to bring his fever down and within 2 hours was back acting like nothing had happened.

Just one of those little things they dont tell new parents when raising a child.  Probably one of the scariest moments in my life.

They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

Wow. I'm so happy this turned out well for you.

My wife is just coming out of a 2 week fight with the flu. This year's batch is wrecking shop.

Dad of a kid on my oldest's basketball team couldn't get his fever under 103 for 5 days.  His kid is probably the 2nd or 3rd best player on the team.  We had a game on Saturday, and the first three times he touched the ball, he turned it over.  I said, uh oh, sure enough, he's been out all week.

I think what we've seen here is how long its lingering.  usually its like 48 hours, sweat it out, puke it out, and you're back.  I've seen people who are a week plus and can't shake the fever.

One of the better post-COVID developments is acceptance of work from home.  We used to have to shove our kids out the door sick, if they didn't have a fever, because neither one of us could take another day.  You'd have people hacking up their strep throat all over everyone at the office.  Now that I have a full home office, as does our whole office, I've noticed a HUGE difference in how often people are sick, simply because they don't have to force themselves in sick because they can't take a day, and working from home is inefficient.  Hell, during the school year, when kids are gone I'm far MORE productive from home, simply because the people who report to me, think twice before a phone call question, that they already know the answer to, and I don't get caught in a 20 minute small talk trap with someone from HR at the copier

My wife got sick a couple of days before Christmas and is just now saying that she is starting to feel better. Not sure what it was and neither was the doctor. DR put her on some antibiotics that seem to help pull her out of it.

Woof, that's brutal.  Glad she's feeling better.

Yeah, I caught something in early January and the active symptoms went away within about a week, but I could tell from exercise capability that I wasn't fully 100% for maybe another week or two after that. Even though I didn't have any symptoms, it was still lingering.

Same, a few weeks ago. It hit my wife harder, which is odd as she is "never" sick.

Out entire circle of friends here had it, whatever it was.

Holy $#!+ man!

All I can say is that as a fellow father, I can't even begin to imagine. When this all passes, try to make sure you take the time to unpack it emotionally, whatever it takes.

Godspeed, brother.
This is more-or-less exactly what I was going to say.  I have a 5, 4, 2, and 1 year old and yeah, to see my 2 year old or any of them like that, yikes!

Glad he got through it!

I never heard of a febrile seizure. Fortunately we raised our daughter to adulthood without a febrile seizure. I would have been scared out of my wits.
The spread of flu locally his high. Last week our rural hospital closed the hospital to children visiting patients because of the spread of flu.

I didnt even know there was such a thing
It tends to strike young children running a 100+ fever
It generally only lasts a few hours and will go away when the fever is reduced
obviously not all children are susceptible

It will scare the hell out of you.  Their eyes are diolated and they are completely unresponsive

My kids were healthy thank goodness aside from athletic injuries.  I would not have dealt well with what the OP describes.  I had something when I was two never diagnosed, thought it was meningitis but tested negative.  My mom was frantic having lost a child before to SIDS.

YOUNG FOLKS shouldn’t get sick.

I had a new friend when we moved in the 1970s to a new neighborhood. I liked iced tea which makes you pee. In his hallway going to the bathroom were pics. I knew his sister, Ann. Ann and George were pictured. But there were 3 kids. The 3rd was Amy, who I didn't know.
George: Amy died of the flu.
