OT - televisions
« on: September 25, 2020, 05:08:01 PM »
OK, so I'll admit that I haven't watched a minute of TV since the end of April, but we got stuff coming up to watch (CFB) and I'm in the market.

I like Samsung and will stay with that brand. I've got a 27 and a 55 currently.

I'm looking at a 75 now.

How come some of the 75's are $800 and some are over $2K? What is the difference? Would it matter for my tired old eyes?

Input would be appreciated greatly.

The OLEDs are breathtaking, and the price is as well comparably.  They are a step ahead if you can get programming to match.  QLEDs are similar.

Most today are 4 K "Smart" TVs and they are pretty inexpensive at COSTCO, even the 75" class.

I have a 1K 70" that is "old" but still viable.  I'm waiting for the OLEDs to come down in price.

OLED is part of it, but also HDR.

HDR uses 10 bits per color instead of 8 bits, which gives much more ability to encode colors and is a big difference.

Every time I walk into Costco, I want a new TV.  It's almost as if they put them all up front like that to stir those feelings.

Does all of that "stuff" matter to a guy with tired old eyes? My 55 was like $450, but there were others at $1500 at the time. I think the picture on the 55 is perfect.

Are there any other things that the expensive ones offer that the cheaper ones don't?

Obviously, it does depend on the quality of your feed, so IMHO, no, it's not a major major upgrade.  You get used to what you see.  Side by side, big difference, off on their own, probably not.

It's a bit like a sound system, you get used to what you have.

The $800 ones, the shark looks real.  The $2,000 TVs, the shark bites you and you have to go to the hospital.  It's EPIC.

I like it Badge.  My 3 TV set up in the new house blows away my old house set up, the only difference is time and new models.   If that's an important spend for you, do it.

Samsung is the way to go and if your internet speed will support it get the 4k

They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

yup, check with your content provider

most don't do true 4K

My IPTV lineup has 5 total 4K channels

I don't watch any of them - no sports

waste of money paying $3 grand for a 4K TV is you won't have the content for another 5 years

4K is not that pricey.  OLED is.

yup, and I can't get all the performance out of my $1000 TV

I'd probably make sure to get 120 Hz on a new TV, but depending on content, this might not help much
