OT - Something I'm thankful for
« on: November 29, 2024, 02:56:39 PM »
My mom had a surgery back in February and the recovery has been a disaster.  Long story short, she hasn't been out of bed since other than to go to medical appointments.

My brother and I arranged to rent a mobility van this weekend so that we could get her out.  I picked it up on my lunchbreak.  What a great set-up.  I'm glad they exist.  The van is an almost new Chrysler Pacifica but the integration of the handicap features is what impressed me.  When I hit the factory key-fob to open the right passenger door, the door opens and then the ramp folds down automatically.  Same in reverse, when I hit the factory button to close the door, the ramp folds up then the door closes.

We have the van all weekend.  Taking her out to see Christmas lights tonight because she always liked that then on Sunday night we have a slew of people going on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad North Pole Adventure.  It is my mom, her two sons, her two daughter's-in-law, her seven grandkids, the other two grandmothers of said grandkids, and the one remaining grandfather of said grandkids.  Should be fun and I think she'll be thrilled to get out of the nursing home for a few hours.

Sounds like it will be a blast.  I wish there was something available like that for my mother-in-law (For a state capital, Pierre sucks at proving things like that.  My sisters - in- law were able to at least get her outside for an hour last week but she couldn't leave the grounds of the nursing home.)  Hope your mom has fun.

I try and imagine being "mobility restricted" to the point I can't leave the house, and then someone arranges such a trip for me in said van.  It would be awesome.

My sister spent her last few years in a home unable to get out of bed, but before that any time we could get her into their van just to drive around a bit was good for her.  She couldn't talk or move and ended up in really bad shape.

your health or health of a loved one is ALWAYS something to be thankful for

even if your health is good - relative decent health that allows you to take care of yourself and be somewhat mobile is a blessing
especially as you age
