I have a new pet peeve.  People that use their garage as a storage unit and park their cars outside.

Tell me you don't live in California without telling me you don't live in California.

Here, the only cars/trucks that go in the garage are special cars/trucks. Everyday drivers are in the driveway or on the street. Most garages are storage facilities.

BRAD keeps his Jeep in there because it's special, guaranteed.

We got rid of a ton (literally, probably more) of things when we moved here.

If we didn't have an electric golf cart, it would be outside and both cars inside.

I'm gonna trade it for a gasser soon. And when I redo the pool and pool cage, there will be a big enough door to pull it inside.

Yep. I keep the top down 24/7. For a while, I actually had the soft top completely removed--had to reinstall it when the Ford Flex died until I bought the Acura, since the Jeep became daily driver for a few weeks. I haven't removed it again yet.

If I had the soft top and windows on the Jeep constantly, I wouldn't need to park it in the garage. But I don't do that b/c it's not a daily driver.

And actually we could park both daily drivers on the driveway. I choose not to because the sprinkler system throws off enough mist/spray that it'll water spot a car if it's near the edge of the driveway. So instead we park one in the middle of the driveway and one on the street.

Feeling a bit sheepish.

Presently, our two car garage has room for 0 cars.

We moved in in 2018, and I finished the basement, which was a bathroom, 3 bedrooms (one non-conforming) a large family room with space for cabinets, fridge, full-size sink, etc, a workout room and storage closet near the furnace/water heater.

Then we had a storm that necessitated a ton of new siding.  Only half of it was used, so I have all that to use on a shed or to replace siding on the house the next time it blows 90 mph with hail.

Then I built a deck off the back door.

Presently have 2 generators, pool stuff, camper stuff, and all the camper cabinets doors and drawers which we just painted.

Camper (until we're finished fixing it up) and my pickup in the driveway, wife's car on the street.

Maybe we get some stuff organized before the snow flies this year, but I don't know that my pickup is going to fit in there regardless.  And, that's another actual valid reason why we pay for insurance.

My wife had a rented storage unit when I moved in with her.  That was a waste of money, there was a flood and a bunch of stuff, mattresses etc. was ruined.  She was paying $150 a month to store stuff that was worth ... maybe $500, maybe.  Anyway, after the flood I talked her into retreiving what was still OK and putting it in the basement.  My guess is many of these storage units are filled with similarly near useless stuff someone thinks they MAY need someday.

We still have quite a bit of stuff here that her kids left, she's going through it now as she wants to take as much as possible to France next month to give to our daughter, who has a rather small apartment.  And two cats.  I don't know what all is in all the boxes, it's OK with me. I have my "junk" stored in two closets in my office.  A lot of it is baseball gear, uniforms, cleats, bats ... and we have a small storage area downstairs, doesn't cost us, I don't know much about what's there, some old paint, two sets of golf clubs, some tools, I open it once a year to get the Christmas tree.

And I realize I am once again I seem to be the one holdout because all my neighbors seem to do this.  I will cut one of my neighbors some slack because he parks his boat in the garage.

But I am putting my foot down in our own house.  We are not going to use our 2-car garage as a storage unit this winter.  We are going to park both cars inside even though both cars are extra long and extra wide SUVs and the garage was built for your average 4-door sedans.  But we will make it work.

I "liked" this post because I sympathize with it, but I still feel attacked.

I'm one of those people, and I hate it.  My wife already lived in the house when we got married, and the garage was actually in good shape back then.  We never really recovered from me bringing in about a one-bedroom apartment's worth of stuff in there.  We rearranged a lot of the furniture, and actually my recliner and couch I was adamant about keeping fit fine.  But a lot of her old stuff wound up out in the garage, and she

will.

not.

get rid of it.

A lot of it is stuff from the boys' childhood that is sentimental to her, and I haven't had the heart to toss it all behind her back.

We've cleared out enough space to park her car in there, so that's progress.  I'm still not happy about so much stuff stored in the garage, but as far as fitting in vehicles, it actually probably won't get any better.  Like utee, my pickup would technically fit in our garage with her car, but I've measured it out, and it would be hella-tight.  I don't think they'll ever comfortably fit in the garage together.  It is a true two-car garage, not a car-and-truck garage.  In the meantime, we still can't park one in there because I've yet to fix the broken track on the garage door and replace the frame of the door from the garage to the inside.

But my truck is new and shiny, her old busted-ass Honda can stay outside, mine is going in the garage.  When she gets a new car, then she can keep it inside.

Hello, Cousin!

But really, I can't throw away all that free siding, and the leftover treated lumber from the deck project.

I do need a shed, but space is at a premium on my lot.

My son-in-law did tell me that he fully expects me to croak from eating some leftovers that I deemed too good to throw out.  But I know how much cleanliness and food safety care was implemented upon the original prep--a lot--so there is that.

"We" accumulate stuff, we save it because we might need it someday.  I recall having to clear out my parents house when my mom moved into a retirement home.  My Dad would keep about anything.  This stuff ends up being an anchor because any time you ponder moving somewhere you think about all you have to do.

Our kids don't want all this mess.  But ....... I keep it anyway, might need it some day.

My wife and I are both terrible, I get it from my depression era raised maternal grandparents.  They ended up filling a fickin' airplane hanger he bought in retirement as part of 7 acres to raise Belgian Draft Horses.

All the shit we are saving has ended up getting new stuff lost--just bought a $9 can of spray paint for the hinges on the camper cabinets.  Lost. Had to buy another one.  I bet it's in the garage somewhere.

But, I have planted 5 4x4 posts from the old deck into the ground for backyard projects.  Saved me $60!

Perhaps before building decks and finishing rooms U should slap up some storage sheds to move your "stuff" in there. Because if wife's car gets buried in the white stuff most assuredly there'll be a Tornado going thru also
