Waymos tend to be pretty packed around here.  I rarely see them empty.

Around here they converted a traffic lane into a bike lane in front of a school, and for weeks confused drivers drove down the bike lane right by the school. No idea how many kids had to be scraped off of windshields.

pet peeve - bicycles on roads with speed limits over 30mph

There is not a lot of room on roads here for bikes, but they ride anyway.

I guess they figure they are living on God's waiting room so why not make it happen faster?

They literally block lanes, forcing vehicles behind them to whatever speed they are going.

Pet Peeve - Bicyclists who demand to be treated like a vehicle on the road with their own special lanes and then refuse to obey the rules of the road, ignoring stop signs, lights, etc. then whenever they choose they ride in the car lane or on the sidewalk.  Get off my lawn and off my road!!!

This realtor has some fairly interesting youtubes (for locals), he has talked about the bike lanes favorably, which is fine with me.  I think part of that is image.  

Anyway, it's a first world issue, and doesn't really peeve me very often.  The city does some silly things.  They recently paved Tenth Street, part of it, and had a water main break that tore it up around a busy intersection.  We had one just north of us on a side street.  Thirteenth street was newly paved about three years ago and already has subsidence areas and holes.  So,  they put metal plates over the holes.  Supposedly the city had a huge effort to repave downtown streets before the soccer gig.

Man I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a cyclist on 360.  It's true there used to be a bunch-- I was one of them.  I lived up in Northwest Hills and would ride down Spicewood Springs Road (the big hill) to 360, and then ride down 360 to the Pennybacker Bridge, and back.  But I don't see anyone doing that anymore.

And downtown, not really any cyclists either.  Despite the millions upon million of dollars spent on bike lanes.  Tons of those stupid Lime and Bird scooters though.

That gives me a sad.  If I can't count on Austinites to be hippie biking granola-crunchers and generally Keep Austin Weird, what can I count on?

Last time I was in Austin that I remember, I was having a hard time navigating around the city from memory.  I used to know that place like the back of my hand.  I had to look up a few routes on Google Maps, something that previously would've been unthinkable.  I left town on 71 out by the airport, a road that used to be open enough to drive pretty fast.  It was bumper to bumper, with the conglomerate of drivers going about 30 mph, frustrating me to no end.  It wasn't even rush hour.  I wondered to myself "WTH??" but then remembered the population explosion that was happening back when I left, and that somewhere down there was a Tesla factory that probably was affecting things the same way Dell blew up the north end of the city when they built offices in Round Rock.  

Even worse, last time I was in San Marcos, I'd looked up a coffee shop online that wasn't there when I lived there, so I routed to it.  By the time I got there, I didn't recognize anything and I didn't know where I was.  How was that possible in a town that size?  After looking at a map, I realized I knew exactly where I was, the buildings had just all changed.....that entire street must've had a lot of the old buildings demo'd and new, much bigger buildings had been built.  It looked like a section of Austin, much more metropolitan than anything I recalled.     

All this is to say, forget pet peeves or grumpy old man.....do we have an Old Fart thread?  More and more, my sentiments belong on that one.

Cyclists are--in America--a weird bunch. Man I love my bikes. And I see way more dangerous things from motorists every damn day than some dumbass on a bike blowing a traffic signal, which is, admittedly, stupid and dangerous, mostly to him (and yes, has the potential to impact the person who hits him, too). But me saying it over and over again is unlikely to create the bicycle utopia I wish we had.

Oooh! This is a pet peeve: non cyclists complaining about cyclists, but not identifying the much more dangerous motorist behavior that goes on around them daily.

Waymos tend to be pretty packed around here.  I rarely see them empty. 

We walked back from lunch (which was excellent) and I saw five Waymos.  I can't readily tell if they were occupied.  Two of them were back to back on 14th street.

This is a half mile walk, so a high density of Waymos.

I also saw a bike on the bike lane on West Peachtree, and another zoomed by us ... on the sidewalk.  We ate lunch on W. Peachtree.

I just don't want to kill a cyclist or witness that horrible event

a good friend of mine was killed on a bicycle earlier this month - it was his fault
he was 72, experienced and mostly careful - until that morning when he swerved in front of that SUV
