Regardless of Holtz's foibles, he was a master motivator.

The people with that particular ability are fascinating to me.
There was a funny story when tOSU was playing OJ's USC  team in the '69 Rose Bowl for the National Championship. In the 2nd Qtr Simpson took off for an 80yd TD run. Well at halftime Woody Hayes was livid -  fuming & screaming at the defensive staff I'm paraphrasing "How the hell can one guy go for an 80yd TD run against us?" And Holtz the DB coach chimed in "Well Coach Hayes that's all he needed" evidently Woody stormed out

He took ND from horrible to a NC in like 3 years.

He also showed morals by suspending good starting players in a bowl game...and then going out and winning big without them.
He did that more then once

I always admired him for that

I watched that game but wasn't aware of the halftime story - makes sense
