I think mobile phones really took off later than the late 90s. Sure, flip phones were becoming a thing, but widespread adoption was more in the mid-2000s, I think. I remember not taking a firm-provided flip phone until 2005 (at a partner's not-so-subtle urging). I was a late adopter, to be sure (at least in that professional environment). The iPhone wasn't debuted until 2007. While most everyone had a flip phone before a smart phone--or at least that was how it felt--I think the true accessibility and widespread adoption that leads to how kids communicate today came with the smart phone, not the flip phone.
But maybe this deserves treatment on the nerd thread or non-policital current events thread, rather than the obits thread.

I was actually just about to post it, springing from utee's point about decades not actually perfectly aligning to the dates we ascribe to them. So I'll jump over there and start that.

Comparing other sitcoms to Seinfeld or Friends is a losing bet because both those shows were uniquely transcendent sitcoms. They are like the Petronas Towers dwarfing the rest of the Kuala Lumpur skyline.
Not sure anyone ever heard it explained like that :017:

That theme song is on my phone.

Jim Marshall, a former Ohio State defensive end and one of the best Minnesota Vikings in franchise history, has passed away at the age of 87 after a lengthy hospitalization, the Vikings announced on Tuesday.

Before his legendary NFL career, Marshall starred for Ohio State in 1957 and 1958, leading the Buckeyes to a pair of top 10 finishes along the defensive line and a championship in 1957 (as well as a Rose Bowl victory). In addition to being an All-American, Marshall was a track star at Ohio State. He was inducted into the Ohio State Hall of Fame in 1978.

Marshall was selected in the 4th round of the 1960 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns after a stint with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL.

But while it was the Browns who drafted him, Marshall wrote the majority of his story with the Minnesota Vikings as a member of Minnesota’s famed “Purple People Eaters” defensive front. Known for his insane toughness, Marshall owns the career records for most consecutive starts and games played for a defensive player.
