I did a report on him in 5th grade for Black History Month.  He kind of became a caricature of himself in his later years, but his campaign was built on a lot of the things Trump won on, in an era where he did about as well as you could without being the committees pick.  He might have been the first major party candidate to realize the power of private companies in the election process

I did one on George Washington Carver, I think also in 5th grade.  I learned a lot of stuff about him, but the most amazing thing to me back then was that he came up with over 100 uses for the peanut.  That blew my little 10-yr old brain...I figured if you can find that many uses for a mundane legume, you must be a genius, and years later that's the main thing that's stuck with me.
