As to the purely hypothetical aspect of the question:

I'm no stock expert, and I don't keep up with a lot of info that could affect that.  That said, I'd be worried about California's recent ruling that found META liable for creating an addictive platform.  I'm not convinced that ordeal is over with.  My concern would be that it's just the first drips in a dam that's gonna break, potentially.  N

Might be absolutely nothing.  But it might be something.

Also, I just pulled up a 10-yr chart on META and slapped a trend line on it.  Going off of nothing more than price-action mechanics, I'm not sure it's done falling off it's 2025 highs.  However, I don't know if principles that I have confidence in for shorter-term trades generalize well to long-term stuff.  I don't have any experience in that.

Did I mention I'm no stock expert?

Meta had plenty of employees who believed that its products were addicting youth, and at its senior executive level, Meta presentations called for increasing youth engagement because youth had the lowest levels of later leaving the platform (suggesting--according to the plaintiffs--that Meta's executives knew youth users were more likely to become addicted to its use). Meta's employees and executives also appeared aware that several of the features on the site, including, for instance, photo filters, had a negative impact on many youth's body image issues, resulting in sometimes severe mental health impacts. Similarly, Meta's employees and executives appeared aware that the comment feature on its apps often led to bullying. Finally, in the New Mexico case (and perhaps others), the New Mexico AG convinced a jury that Meta's algorithms often resulted in targeting vulnerable youth for sex trafficking. These weren't merely theories plaintiffs argued; the evidence, including internal communications and the use of test accounts, was pretty damning.

Meta was likely very wise to settle these cases (the New Mexico case is separate). It had legitimate legal issues to argue on appeal, but that would only have come after a trial where Meta clearly thought it had a good chance of losing and getting hit with a big verdict.

I was holding onto some stock from my company to avoid short term capital gains taxes. But I’m realizing it’ll need a big jump to actually have gains, so we might be selling off soon.

Since this is not my area at all, do those settlements spell the end of the matter, or is it possible more plaintiffs could allege similar things and more settlements or lawsuits could be pending?  I don't really know, from a legal standpoint, what could potentially be in the works there, and it affects my risk-assessment for the stock.

I'm not giving any stock advice, but Meta is still facing hundreds of individual lawsuits, as well as lawsuits from various school districts over these same issues. Each of those has some different legal issues, but Meta already settled with at least one of the school districts to avoid a trial scheduled for earlier this summer. There are approximately 3000 pending claims in the multi-district litigation that was consolidated in the federal court in Oakland, California. There are also cases in different state courts (such as the one in New Mexico).

Back in the day, I was workingwith lawyers almost daily, and hung out with them some.  Our company got "sued" many times a year, usually frivolously, one lady sued us in Federal court repeatedly for some patent infringement, her claims were comical.  Pretty often a decision was made to just "throw money at it" (not in the lady's case) and make it go away.  There was a sizeable contingency fund for this, and litigation was insanely expensive.

Meta may well be doing the same thing.

We had some "submarine patent cases" that showed up where I'd get somewhat involved.  The PTO at that point was allowing just about anything.  We could usually file a rebuttal and they'd go away, but not always, a few times we paid out when we could have prevailed in court because the claims were silly.

We're just going to keep doing what we've been doing. We've averaged about a 22% return since 2020. No reason to get off that train.

No worries.  As noted, I'm not interested in messing with individual stocks and don't plan to do anything with META one way or the other.  I asked purely out of legal interest, trying to learn more regarding something about which I know very little, and I appreciate your input.

Back in the day, I was workingwith lawyers almost daily, and hung out with them some.

When I was a landman, my work frequently interacted with clients' lawyers, albeit indirectly, usually.  Some of the crews I worked for had lawyers, they could be very helpful.

One guy I worked with was in law school at the time and he had a sample bar exam he was showing us.  The oil and gas section was quite short, and I was happy to note I felt like I could correctly and adequately answer the questions in depth.  A small group of us were milling around his desk while he went over the questions with us when our broker (boss, basically) came out of his office on his way somewhere and asked what we were doing.  We told him we were looking at the oil and gas portion of a sample Texas bar exam and joked that we could pass it.  He paused briefly, unimpressed, and grunted "Good.  I'd get rid of anybody who couldn't answer that section."

I'm about as worthless as they come in many (most) legal matters, but at least at one point, if you had property rights and/or mineral rights questions about the state of Texas, I had answers.
