Bought the BB dip today... I'm now averaged down to 9.12 basis.

Well, my covered call(s) expired yesterday.

I opened it 108 days out, when the stock had fallen 28% off its ATH, and then recovered up to only be about 9% below ATH. I got almost a 10% premium and set a strike price over 41% above the price when I sold the call(s)... Thinking "oh, wouldn't it be nice if I got out with that profit, but it probably won't get there!"

Well, it ripped through that number in 3 weeks and then kept ripping. It ultimately topped at 2.35x my strike price and 3.32x the price it was on Apr 1 when I wrote the call.

At close yesterday, it was still 35% over my strike and 27% over my break-even price.

And now it's done. Nothing left to do but temporarily hold what I'll owe in taxes and diversify the rest.

It's always tough to argue counterfactuals and I'm not going to claim that I would have actually sold it all at the top... But had I not written those calls, I'm fairly certain I would have sold most of them now above my break-even price. Stock getting called away with the share price significantly above break-even price is a lot better of a problem than writing the call and then watching the stock crater, of course. But I left a lot of potential money on the table.

An expensive lesson learned.

I wrote a couple "out of the money call options" and stocks that had some recent runups.  If they sell, OK with me.  If not, I'll keep the premium at least.

If I had the time, I'd do this frequently, Sell to Open 4-6 weeks out on some stocks.

saw my financial guy yesterday

got a couple things done, then decided to start taking a few dollars a month off the top of the account and into my checking account

might as well spend it while I'm young - won't need it in 10-20 years

I was gonna wait a few months until I hit a goal.  He talked me into starting now.  Just showed me the numbers.

Ever since I started taking money out, the fund I'm raiding just keeps growing. It's a nice feeling.

Yup, I'm taking out so little per month/year it will obviously keep growing and still reach my goal.
I'm sure he wants to get me started this way to show me the obvious.
and start paying some taxes :73:

I have a LT health care policy, which is expensive, but should hopefully prevent draining funds if I get disabled.

And there will be a time when travel is not really much of an option for us, at least overseas travel.

I have heard multiple investment advisors/retirement planners/wealth management folks say that having a hard time getting people to start digging into their savings is a real-world challenge, and a fairly common one.  People are apparently so scared about their futures that they hesitate to touch their assets, or unnecessarily withdraw only bare minimums when they do access them.  People living below their means, in other words.

Some have talked about having to encourage their clients to enjoy the fruit of their hard work and reassure them that it's okay, it's what was planned for.  I've even heard some talk about doing little exercises to get their clients used to the idea and stop being scared.  Maybe that's what your guy wanted to check.....a litmus test to see if you'll dig in or if you're one of the ones he's gonna have to beat over the head and force to have a good time.

It's often a struggle for folks who have experienced hard times and tried to save.  Some kind of balance is needed, and that gets tough.
