The Lotto here funds the Hope Scholarships, so there is that.  I buy a ticket on line on occasion.

I figure folks can easily win playing Blackjack in Vegas because everyone I know who goes wins a bundle.  I haven't figured out how they afford those massive casinos knowing the house must be losing tons of money.

Gameday is utterly unwatchable since he joined.
It's been unwatchable for much longer than that. Corso's decline, Desmond Howard... Brutal.

Hell, Corso's decline was sometimes my reason to watch...

So why do I occasionally do it? Because I can afford to, and for a couple of hours up to a couple of days, I "might" be rich. And that's fun. It would be a problem if the money spent truly impacted my ability to do other more important things in my life. But by doing it so rarely, and with a small amount of money, it's basically just noise.

I don't meant to imply there's no value in it.  If doing that every now and then is fun, then that amount of fun has an economic value attached to it and you're free to make that value judgement and pay for experience as often as you choose.

All I mean is, as an avenue to generating wealth?  You might as well take your dollars from your wallet, rip them up, throw them in the toilet, then pee on them.

Over the years, I have gone from:

1.  Watching GD as a kind of morning ritual.
2.  Having it turned on but meandering around doing other things until they mention my team.
3.  Having it turned on only if they are at my school.
4.  Reading stuff here youse guys write and not turning it on at all.

GD GD ...
this has been my progression

but, how did you get to have that opinion of Greg Davis??
"Courage; Generosity; Fairness; Honor; In these are the true awards of manly sport."

The US Postal Service has got to go. I ordered a t-shirt from a local joint in Cape Coral (no storefront) and they put it in the mail at the N Fort Myers post office. That's 16 miles from here.

Ybor City is Tampa. God knows where it will head next.

WTF?

I've been told about 70% of the mail in my small little town routes through the "hub" of another nearby small town, albeit a larger one than where I live.  That hub is awful.  The number of instances in this area of people having mail lost or not delivered correctly which is processed through that hub is way too high.  To the point where I roughly assign it a 25% "unreliable" value.....much higher than anything ought to be.

Mostly I don't care because it's just junk mail, or bills I'd rather not pay.

But there are a few things I do care about, and it has caused some grief and some anxiousness even when things do get delivered correctly.

Discovered on 6/4/2026 that the group mailbox (serves many houses on the block) at the end of the street of our rental, was knocked over, busted up, and inoperable.  We notified the post office and they said it was planned for repair but couldn't give us a date, then said they'd contact us when it was repaired and get us a new key.

Four weeks go by, nothing done to repair it.  Then finally around mid-July we drive past and notice it's fixed.  No call from the post office of course. A couple days go by and we call them and they say they have a new key for us.  We go by to pick it up a couple days later, they can't find the key and ask me to fill out a form to get a new key.  The form is like a third sheet of paper and seems like a "ditto" copy from the 70s.  It only has 3 lines for name, address, and phone# and they hand me a sharpie looking marker to fill it out.  I'm thinking "yeah there's no way this will work" but I go ahead and do it and say, "you have my phone#, so you're going to call when it's ready, right?"  The guy looks at me with complete indifference and says, "just ncome back in a week."

So a week later my i s c & a aggie wife calls them and they say they have eyes on the key.  So we drive over, wait in a short line, and then they actually have the key!  Not one but three copies.  We're finally in business and we swing by to drop it at the rent house before our new tenants move in.  Figuring it was a formality we test the key on the mailbox.  It doesn't work.  None of the three keys work.  And they don't work on any of the ~30 mailboxes on that block.

That was last Friday, haven't had the time or the energy to follow up with them.  But I'm sure the next encounter will embody some new form of postal terror.

@utee94 , is that the same property the bunghole manager was trying to steal?  At this point, that place either needs an exorcist or a flame-thrower.

It’ll probably head back your way?

It looks like packages are processed and sorted regionally.

No clue.

We had tracked mail go from our house to Punta Gorda, then to Fort Myers, then to Miami, then to Ybor, then to Englewood, which is 40 minutes from our house.

Businesses that run inefficiently always fail.

USPS needs to go away.

I mean, the Post Office is bad at many things, but mail going far and wide seems like an act of being efficient?

Having a preponderance in of local sorting operations and facilities seems more likely to be more expensive than adding to the driven volume of trips that will likely have to be made anyway.
