The reason so many people get ruined by lottery winnings is that there's not a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram between "people who are emotionally able to handle large amounts of money" and "people who play the lottery".
If you think about it, the vast majority of the people who play lotto are the ones who are least equipped to handle the success.
I'm sure we all play for fun from time to time, but I wonder what the % of winners are that are regular players vs the "blue moon/feeling lucky" types like us?

To me the biggest problem with a huge lottery win would be the fact that--especially in a state where winners' names are public--it makes you a target for all the vultures [frequently relatives!] and scam artists the world can throw at you. And I'm sure the world's supply of those is endless.

It's why I say I don't want to be rich and famous... Just rich. It'd be far better to be rich and unknown...

If the vultures and scam artists didn't exist, I highly doubt a giant lottery windfall would ruin me.

The reason so many people get ruined by lottery winnings is that there's not a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram between "people who are emotionally able to handle large amounts of money" and "people who play the lottery".

To the bottom part, I think I’d add to it:
-Being a certain kind of rich (and known) make a lot of people insane, regardless of their constitution. (And as you said, the social aspect is an issue. Like a lot of people will see you differently)
-The lack of step laddering up is an issue. Like you need different tools to survive/thrive at different economic levels, and learning them ain’t as instant as the money.

I mean, sports have spent a ton of time educating athletes because they used to mess all that up on the reg.

Yeah, I usually call the lottery "a tax on being bad at math"...

And yeah, I do play for fun from time to time. But I'd say that the number of people like us who maybe spend $10 or $20 on lotto a small handful of times per year win less often than the people who play $10-20 per week (or more). It's just statistically more likely that the regular players will win at a proportional rate to how they spend vs non-regular players.

So, the less you play, it's even dumber to play the next time.

I never play, so I must be a genius.

I'm not even hoping for the jackpot anymore.

I'd settle for 4 numbers and the Powerball number = 50K + Powerplay multiplier (up to 250K).

My novel character decides to try and "do good" with his winnings ($105 mil), and runs into all sorts of issues.

I just decided to have him piloting a Cessna over Kentucky and having the engine quit, great fun.  I can do whatever I want.

grumpy about More McAfee.

Gameday is utterly unwatchable since he joined.

Not that I was watching much anyway, but I sometimes had it on in the background on Saturday mornings while I was taking care of other things, getting ready for my 11 am Saturday quittin' time.  I can't even stand to hear his voice at low volume in another room while I'm paying attention to something else.  Dude is the male version of Fran Drescher.

Yes. The lotto is dumb. It is a very very poor negative-EV bet.

You can make an argument that when it gets to a large enough jackpot, it approaches or could even be positive-EV. I.e. powerball odds of winning are 1 in 292,201,338. Given that it's a $2 bet, that means that once the jackpot is above $584,402,676, the napkin math would say it's a positive bet if you're a sole jackpot winner.

However, that's not really true. Because you only get that much money if you spread it over 30 years, which doesn't grow with inflation, so your real winnings are smaller than your nominal todays-dollars winnings. Or you can take the lump sum, which is probably somewhere around half that. Which means the jackpot needs to be double that if you take the lump sum to be a positive EV bet, so maybe you need a jackpot to be somewhere north of $1.2B to be positive-EV. And then it's still risking a split jackpot--which gets higher when more people play, which happens when jackpots get that large.

So playing the lottery is objectively a bad bet.

So why do I occasionally do it? Because I can afford to, and for a couple of hours up to a couple of days, I "might" be rich. And that's fun. It would be a problem if the money spent truly impacted my ability to do other more important things in my life. But by doing it so rarely, and with a small amount of money, it's basically just noise.

Over the years, I have gone from:

1.  Watching GD as a kind of morning ritual.
2.  Having it turned on but meandering around doing other things until they mention my team.
3.  Having it turned on only if they are at my school.
4.  Reading stuff here youse guys write and not turning it on at all.
