Batman is solid, but this is still easy.

(14) Major League (1989)
Close, but I have the upset here. Goonies may appeal to many of us based on our age and level of nostalgia, but Major League caught the cultural moment of 1989; whereas the Goonies is a good kids adventure movie, but a lower 80s factor.

(7) Weird Science (1985)
(10) Say Anything… (1989)
Another close upset, but is 10 over 7 really much of an upset. This has the feel of a good mid-major losing to a solid power conference player. 

(2) Back to the Future (1985)
(15) Weekend at Bernie’s (1989)
Obvious.



Honestly, there's only one game in the next round of this bracket (Risky Business/Terminator) that will be close.

I'm sorry I haven't posted the poll yet, every time I get started I get some important work activity that pushes it out.  I wanted to be done with the entire tournament by the time Football season started, but it's obvious that won't happen.

Man, jumping ahead to (next summer?), the 90s are a tough one. So many great movies, but I feel like the cultural zeitgeist is harder to nail down. And so many of us were probably in prime movie watching years. Gonna be tough.

This amused me, particularly the first two things our movies capture...ChatGPT's response to our list of movies (and the big budget movies Gigem excluded because they didn't fit the 1980s timeframe) as they relate to the culture of the 1980s:

That's a nice list covering the gaps.  I suspect ff Gigem's original list had been designed by a woman, it would probably have many of those on it, and a few more that we're not thinking about right now.

Yeah true as well.  Most of us are either GenX or very very young boomer.

Except for Cincy of course, he's probably even older than The Greatest Generation...
