It's all in good fun.  It's literally what this thread is about.  I'm about to repost my list, so stay tuned.  

OK guys.  I fixed the brackets.  I had to leave out some amazing movies, and I fixed some of the #1 seeds.  

If there are any more mistakes, let me know.  

I know we can argue about which movies I left in, and which ones I left out.  

It's all in Good Fun, and remember, just because I didn't put one of your favorites into the top seeds, doesn't mean it can't win.  I intentionally left some of my top seeds out of the top billing just because I tried not to let my personal preferences dominate the field.  That being said, this list is hugely reflective of my childhood memories and experiences.  Feel free to openly debate, and remember to vote, and it's all in good fun.  

If you like, we can even have mini-tournaments like best 1980's Christmas movie, or horror movie, etc.  

Is there anyway to do that where it won’t be extremely messy. Like multiple polls per thread ?  Or a clever way to combine each round into one poll ?

I'd probably do one thread per region.  Then do the rounds for each region within those 4 threads.  Then you could do a new thread for the semis voting, and one last thread for the Finals voting. 

Just a thought.

@Gigem what an ugly thing to say.  Why, does this mean we're not friends anymore?  You know, if I thought you weren't my friend...I just don't think I could bear it.

It’s just a personal preference. Not sure how old you were when it came out ( my memory says 1987 or 89). But I was almost in HS. I was more into Sci Fi and Comedy. 

It almost didn’t make the cut because it’s really a period piece, taking place in medieval times. But as I recall, it’s set in the 1980’s as a grandfather telling his grandson a story. They cut in and out of modern times. 

It’s such a beloved movie that I just couldn’t exclude it.

Atari Region:
1/16: Ghostbusters: easy first round, but this movie is looking over its shoulder as it gets deeper in the tourney.
8/9: Real Genius: this was tight until the last ten minutes, but in the end Commando can't hold up to better examples of 80s action flicks. Real Genius captures the promise and fear of technology and rebelling against stiff, staid authority that was an 80s trope, for a solid, but not blowout win.
5/12: Heathers pulls the classic 5/12 upset, but it was on the game's last play/movie's last frame? Heathers captures the darker turn the later 80s took, with Christian Slater, Winona Ryder, and Shannon Doherty kicking off the Gen-X emo movement, but this one wasn't without a solid fight. Trading Places is a great one, but Eddie Murphy saved his most iconic performance for another game/movie, and it cost them at the buzzer.
4/13: WarGames: Field of Dreams is a better movie, but it could have been any time. WarGames perfectly captures the 1980s fear of great powers nuclear annihilation and the wonder at quickly developing consumer computer technology.
6/11: Revenge of the Nerds: again, the Princess Bride is the better movie, but as a time capsule, Revenge of the Nerds captures the 1980s itself. The Princess Bride could have been set anytime with different posters hanging in Fred Savage's room.
3/14: Beverly Hills Cop: What Eddie Murphy held off in Trading Places, he nails as a Detroit cop visiting the excess of Beverly Hills and the cocaine trade's impact on the rest of society. As a three seed, this movie has the potential to make a deep run.
7/10: Police Academy: continuing the theme, Rain Man is the better movie, but Police Academy captures the time, including social change through affirmative action, racial tensions, and all around slapstick silliness.
2/15: ET. Period.

MTV:
1/16: Top Gun
8/9: Big
5/12: Predator: not an easy win, but a comfortable one. Maybe the quintessential 80s action flick with huge stars, special ops on secret missions to Central America, and a sci fi bad guy? Takes it over a solid 80s timepiece in Footloose.
4/13: Purple Rain: only in the 80s takes it over standard (if fantastic) slapstick humor.
6/11: Lethal Weapon: at the buzzer, with lead changes on every possession. ICONIC holiday movie that violates the franchise rule, but stands on its own for the holidays vs. one of the 80s great action movies, with racial tension, ageism, rebelling against authority, Vietnam hangover, and the drug trade. I literally changed my vote as I was typing this. The last gasp shot for the win because that last clause is the 1980s.
3/14: Rocky IV: drop the rest of the Rocky crap, this is 'Murica vs. those dirty Commies at its peak. Road house is a fun action movie, but Rocky IV is the Cold War for the masses.
7/10: St. Elmo's Fire: another squeeker at the buzzer. The Brat Pack writ large preserves a slim lead with boring free throws. Lost Boys is the better movie, but if we're talking pure 80s, the Brat Pack takes it over the Coreys, but only just barely.
2/15: upset city!!: Wall Street: takes a shocking win over Karate Kid. Pure 80s excess vs. classic underdog story. Is the Karate Kid more iconic? Of course it is. Is Wall Street a better encapsulation of the greed is good 80s? You betcha.

Delorean:
1/16: Save Ferris
8/9: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure: Surprisingly easy 8/9 game. Neverending Story was a cultural moment as a movie; Bill and Ted tells the story of 1989 pop culture.
5/12: Risky Business: 5 seed survives a scare. Pitting an 80s time capsule against witty media commentary. Space Balls is an excellent critique of the movie age Star Wars ushered in, but Risky Business is more 1980s specific from the tipoff to the buzzer.
4/13: Terminator.
3/14: Major League: in a tight one. The Goonies has Corey Feldman, blatant racism/tokenism, and a lot of nostalgia, but Major League has the dying rust belt and rich vs. working man overtones. Wild thing pushes the Tribe over the finish line.
6/11: Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza over Gotham in a nail biter. European terrorists, women's lib and its affect on blue collar men, rap music, overreaching news media, and even a little inner city violence all feature in this true classic. Jack Nicholson was amazing and Gotham was an 80s-New York inspired mess, but Die Hard gets it done.
7/10: Say Anything: and it's not close. the only reason Weird Science made it is because this board is mostly populated with men. If you took an even close to representative sample of 80s teens, Say Anything's John Cusack crushes Weird Science. But points for putting Oingo Boingo on the map.
2/15: Back to the Future

Big Hair:
1/16: Fast Times at Ridgemont High: the Money Pit's dream matchup of Tom Hanks and Shelley Long scored a couple of early points before being blown off the court.
8/9: Short Circuit: another nailbiter. Short Circuit hits just enough of the 80s fascination with technology to bump off a great entry in the slasher genre. In the end, there isn't much about Friday the 13th that has to be in the 80s.
5/12: Beetlejuice: with another 12/5 upset. Tim Burton coaches Emo Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Catherine O'Hara, and Jeffrey Jones to a strong team effort to knock off a down-the-middle (and solid) slasher that could be based at just about any time.
4/13: Gremlins: Planes, Trains and Automobiles doesn't go down without a fight, but just can't keep up with the full court press from Gremlins.
6/11: John Hughes: Coming to America is another solid Eddie Murphy flick, but it isn't as iconic 80s as Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald and their teen angst.
3/14: National Lampoon's Vacation: Harold Ramis coaches a perfectly matched team of Griswolds and a peak, smoking hot Christie Brinkley in a hot-in-its-own-right Ferrari, and they just outclass a journeyman Uncle Buck.
7/10: When Harry Met Sally: in a surprisingly easy win over the chalk. Does Rambo--especially Rambo III--capture the 80s? Sure. But When Harry Met Sally dominates on the boards, closes down the passing lanes like the Ewing-led Knicks, and adds some splash and pizzazz like Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, and the cocaine-fueled 1986s Mets. On paper it looked like a decent matchup; in practice the Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) front court, with Marie (Carrie Fisher) and Jess (Bruno Kirby) as key role players, are just too much for the one-man show that is Rambo.
