Actually was back in Ann Arbor helping my parents with some stuff with selling the house.  My dad has UM/Detroit SI covers framed all over the man cave, and I specifically noticed the one where #6 Michigan beat #3 Notre Dame in Powlus' South Bend debut, and the subline was that Michigan outdueled Notre Dame, and delayed the start of a legend

Eh, he loved college football for what it was.  Was he nostalgic for Notre Dame being what it was?  Sure.  Did he provide any insight?  Nah.  But he loved what we all loved.  It's funny that Ron Powlus existed in an era where he was a small HS legend in central PA, went to Notre Dame, redshirted, and then sort of failed.  He was a perfectly fine QB.  But 30 years later, he would have transferred to IMG, definitely not redshirted, but then transferred down after Notre Dame paid the best MAC QB to replace him.  And now he's a joke.  He existed in the narrow window where college football got broad national coverage, but there was no social media.  It was literally like a 10 year window

great point. and I actually looked this up and Powlus held every school passing record at ND until Brady Quinn came along and broke them in the mid 2000s. so maybe he wasn't a total joke/bust and just a guy that was a solid college QB with flashes of great that wasn't nearly as good as the hype coming in. like a Quinn Ewers or something.

And I do think it's probably easier to rank these HS kids now with the Rivals, 247, On3, ESPN having the budgets to send scouts out to HS games and to combines/camps/events/HS All-Star games and then of course things like Hudl/YouTube channels with players uploading game film.

there is always going to be busts or prospects that just don't quite hit- but my guess is the hit % on the OMERG 5 STARZ is much better now than it used to be back in the early 1990s when Powlus was coming up.
