Buckeyes go on the road in a night game that will obviously be the premiere matchup of the night.

OSU hasn't played anybody, and the Spartans do have an improved defense that has kept them in games, ranking 22nd on SP+. Their offense has no been improved (114th). However, they do have a young quarterback who can rifle balls, so if he stays away from turnovers, we could have something here.

That QB should’ve thrown 6 INT’s vs BC. He’s got obvious talent that flashes off screen at times but he’s been struggling. I was honestly expecting more from him. He probably isn’t quite ready enough to play- he’s still 18 year old RS Fr., and that problem is intensified by Sparty having so many injuries at WR and an OL that is really struggling.

Ohio State rolls in this one.

There will be blood.

The one thing the Bucks haven't really done well on offense is attack downfield. They've had opportunities but Howard hasn't been great connecting. They need to get better at that to attack the better defenses, so I imagine we will see at least some attempts downfield against Sparty.

For some reason the 1998 OSU/MSU tilt always stands out to me because the old boards at the time were FLOODED with people wanting to fire Cooper.  OSU was really good that year, and MSU was 6-6.  The game was @ OSU.  I just looked it up, I hadn't realized that Saban was the coach for MSU that year ( I knew he was the coach of MSU at one point).  That maybe explains at least something.

Anyways, OSU fans were really, really angry.  I just looked up their record, and OSU was 11-1 in 1998.  That one game probably cost them a shot at the title, which UTenn won over FSU.  I had forgotten how close they came to winning it all.  This is probably one of the reasons why there was such a big push to first expand the BCS, and then playoffs, and then more playoffs.

I remember a lot of Aggies were mad because we got paired up with OSU in the Sugar Bowl, and they really should have been in the BCS NCG or maybe face a higher team. We were ranked about #10, and they were like #3 or something.

I watched that OSU/MSU game at a bar in Seattle with my wife. It ultimately sent Wisconsin to Pasadena. OSU and UW were 7-1 in conference, and didn't play each other. UW got in over the recency rule.

There were a lot of 1-loss teams that year.  Not sure if that is unusual, or was just par for the course back then.

Any staunch Buckeye had wanted Cooper canned for quite sometime but pretty sure the old CFN board had come into play in or after 2001 I want to say. So maybe you were on the CNN/SI board

It was definitely the old CNNSI boards.  I never really got on the CFN boards, seems like I was on CNNSI for quite a while, then they shut those down and we moved to 3-5 different sites over the years, which is why I know some of the posters from way back and some I never mixed it up with until this site.  there was Wingnuts site, Dustin R's site, a site ran by a husker (?Rattler maybe?).  I can't keep up with them all.

One of those games you never forget.
Cooper was wound too tight and the players always sensed it.

That 98 team was one of their best- and was loaded with NFL guys.  They were dominating that game- up by 15 mid third quarter.  24-9
Then they muffed a punt.  Cooper and his players then folded like a cheap tent.

They finished 11-1 after the Sugar Bowl win and ranked 2nd. 🥈
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Worldcrossing was one.  Somebody once recorded the detailed story of our nomadic journey across the internet and I don't remember who-- probably JCG. :(

I'm sure I've shared this here before but here is my story of that game:

I had a very inconsiderate relative who had the audacity to get married on that day.  I was a recent (the prior December) tOSU grad.  I went to the wedding with my parents and my younger brother (Sr in HS at the time, about to go to tOSU).  The Wedding and Reception were in Canton which is around an hour from my city.  The wedding and reception were a few hours apart but it wasn't really worth driving all the way back home just to turn around and drive back so we went to a sports bar and watched the first half.

Ohio State jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first quarter then basically didn't do much in the second while allowing two scores.  Fortunately for the Bucks, they held MSU to FG's both times so the halftime lead was still eight at 17-9.

At halftime we headed for the reception.  The second half got underway during our drive and as we were parking the MSU QB threw an interception which tOSU returned for a Pick-6.  The XP made it a 15 point game at 24-9.  That seemed pretty safe given how much better tOSU was than MSU that year so we headed into the reception confident that the game was won.

When a late arrival at the reception asked what we thought of tOSU's loss we thought they were kidding.

Ohio State ended up INCREDIBLY close to the inaugural BCSNCG even after that loss.  The relevant teams heading into the CG's:

  • 11-0 Tennessee, vs #23 MissSt in SECCG
  • 11-0 KSU, vs #10 aTm in B12CG
  • 10-0 UCLA, at nr Miami, FL (this game had been scheduled for the fall but delayed due to a Hurricane)
  • 11-1 Florida State, regular season complete
  • 10-1 Ohio State, regular season complete

So basically:
  • TN and KSU just needed to win.
  • UCLA needed to win and for one of TN/KSU to lose
  • FSU needed two of TN/KSU/UCLA to lose
  • tOSU needed all three of TN, KSU, and UCLA to lose

KSU lost to aTm in the B12CG and UCLA lost in the Orange Bowl (stadium not game) to the Hurricanes.

Ohio State got two out of three and MissSt had a 14-10 4th quarter lead over Tennessee.
