EXPERT TAKE: Nebraska vs. Rutgers
Sean Callahan – HuskerOnline Pubisher

This is a good match-up for Nebraska in a lot of ways. Rutgers does not have a dynamic or explosive offense. They struggle on the offensive line. The Blackshirts should have another solid outing. Mark Whipple and the offense will put together some solid drives of their own and take advantage of the Scarlet Knights’ aggressiveness on defense. NU will close the game out in the fourth quarter.

Nebraska 31, Rutgers 24

Steven Sipple – HuskerOnline columnist

This feels like a classic toss-up game. Rutgers’ hard-nosed defense likely will blitz early and often. Nebraska fans should thank heavens that quarterback Casey Thompson is tough enough to keep pulling himself from the turf after big hits. He’ll make just enough big plays in the passing game for his team to prevail, including a couple by Marcus Washington. Look for Washington to re-emerge as a major weapon.

Nebraska 24, Rutgers 20

Robin Washut – HuskerOnline senior writer

Nebraska is trying to accomplish a feat it hasn’t done since 2018 by winning back-to-back Big Ten games. On paper, this looks like another favorable matchup for the Huskers, especially with how they looked in last week’s victory over Indiana. A big part of me still wants to stick with the “prove it” approach before trusting NU to pull this one off. But I’m going with Nebraska anyway.

Nebraska 28, Rutgers 20

Andy Kendeigh – KETV ABC-Omaha

Two quotes stand out this week.  Mickey Joseph on Tuesday, “The most physical team will win the game.”  Bill Busch on Tuesday, “It’s going to be a grown-man’s fight.”  The Huskers took a step forward against Indiana playing physical football, but can they do it on the road against a team known for physicality?  Nebraska’s never lost to Rutgers and that trend continues.

Nebraska 27, Rutgers 20

Jim Rose – 1110 KFAB Radio-Omaha

Husker fans need to come down off the Indiana high pronto.  Rutgers is a lot better on defense than the Hoosiers.  That said, football is a game of momentum.    Nebraska has a little of it right now.  This week will be another chance to show improvement on defense against one of the lessor offenses in the B1G.    This is it for the softies.  Starting NEXT week, the chores get a lot tougher.

Nebraska 31, Rutgers 21

Hey Everyone, I Don't Want To Be A Weirdo Promoting My Work All The Time, But Today At Noon (10/07) I'm Dropping A Story On Nebraska Football's Culture As It Relates To The Big Ten. I Interviewed Two-Time Nebraska Sports-Reporter Of The Year, SEAN CALLAHAN. I'm You Nebraska Fans Know Who That Is... Feel Free To Check It Out! https://buzz.uni.edu/rattalksbigten/big-ten-football-culture-with-a-nebraskacornhusker-backbone/

Sean Callahan's Twitter: https://twitter.com/Sean_Callahan
Altogether what I found really interesting was how Sean elaborated on the “unique” position that the Huskers are in. He explained that Nebraska is the second-smallest populated state in Power 5 Football. Alongside that, they are expected to win at an elite level with their talent. The weight that Nebraska walks around with every week with these types of expectations is something they take pride in. Sean noted,

The Huskers arrived in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Thursday to prepare for their first true road game of the season, tonight’s meeting with Rutgers.

Rutgers announced on Friday morning the game sold out. That marks the second straight conference sell out at SHI Stadium for the first time since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten in 2014.

Friday’s game is dubbed “Black Friday” where the Rutgers home fans are meant to wear black. The Scarlets Knights will also wear their all-black uniforms, including helmets, for the game. Nebraska, meanwhile, will be in white helmets and tops with red pants (and stripes on the pants).

Enthusiastic Husker fans arrived to SHI Stadium and tailgated in force. Fans in general attended the pre-game football show festivities on the south end of the stadium, just besides the Rutgers practice field. Former Husker Will Compton joined in, marking his second in-person appearance for a Nebraska game after the North Dakota game.

Here’s a look at some of the other scenes, shouts and factoids for Husker fans before kickoff:

>> Nebraska puts its perfect 5-0 New Jersey record on the line tonight. The Huskers haven’t ever lost a game in the state of New Jersey.

>> The Huskers (2-3, 1-1 Big Ten) can move atop the Big Ten West standings with a win tonight. Rutgers (3-2, 0-2) is tied with Michigan State in the Big Ten East cellar.

>> Wahoo native and former Nebraska quarterback Noah Vedral is expected to start today. He started last week against Ohio State and played five non-throwing snaps before being pulled. He’s still healing from an injury in camp. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said the team is slowly integrating him back into full game time. The Scarlet Knights are also helmed by sophomores Evan Simon and Gavin Wimsatt, who is unlikely to play due to a lingering injury.

>> Dating back to 2018, Nebraska hasn’t beaten consecutive Big Ten opponents for 1,420 days. The Huskers topped Michigan State, 9-6, on the heels of a 54-35 win over Illinois the week before.

>> University of Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie Green and athletic director Trev Alberts also came to SHI Stadium for the game.

>> Nebraska’s top four quarterbacks made the travel roster. Casey Thompson, Chubba Purdy, Logan Smothers and Matt Masker were all dressed in warmups for the Huskers.

>> Defensive back Tommi Hill warmed up with Nebraska’s wide receivers. He came in listed as co-starting cornerback with freshman Malcolm Hartzog.

>> Punter Brian Buschini came out in full pads and warmed up in full equipment. His left ankle is still heavily taped from the sprained ankle he suffered against Oklahoma.

>> Backup place kicker Charlie Weinrich made the travel roster and warmed up alongside Timmy Bleekrode. Junior Cameron Piper and senior Brady Wease also dressed and will long snap on field goals and punts, respectively.

>> Nebraska came into Friday relatively injury free. Tight end Thomas Fidone was left off the roster again as he continues to heal from an injury. Tight ends coach Sean Beckton told Greg Sharpe on this week’s Husker Football Radio Show that Fidone is about 90% back and up to 250 but “as fast as ever.” Beckton offered no timetable and left it up to the medical staff.
