NCAA discussing moving early signing period to January
« on: December 08, 2021, 05:30:02 PM »
really don't understand these people. no one makes kids sign early. if they don't want to sign Dec 15th- then they can just wait until the regular signing period like everyone else.

"no one makes kids sign early"

Kind of? Coaches very often pressure kids to sign early, with the threat of pulling offers either implied or stated directly. So people with more power just leverage the hell out of them.

The idea with this was to let kids who were in a stable spot recruiting-wise shut things down, with perhaps the bonus that it would slow down some of the drive to fire everyone.

Instead, it's just encouraged earlier and more aggressive hirings and firings. And once those happen, more kids who were stable suddenly are not, and then they scramble to something more stable and things get weirder and more messy. I was here for the early signing period. At the moment, it's not really affected behaviors or situations positively, and thus, I wouldn't mind seeing a rollback.

Both Signing Periods should be during dead periods.  They need to move it up to August.

The December Signing period benefits nobody, other than coaches.

Yawn.

No one makes them sign anything. They either sign or they don't. They can wait til NSD in Feb if they wish.

And it works both ways. Kids can sign early and ensure they have a spot locked in 100% which some might want to do vs waiting til NSD and the shitshow fricken flip season chaos bullshit drama that happens in Feb on NSD and those kids lose a spot and get processed for higher ranked kids that coaches weren't thinking they were going to get.

The original signing period was over a few months in the spring, which matched what most seniors do. That turned into signing day. So they make an early signing day, and now nearly everyone signs then. I don't have strong feelings about it, but not sure they ever needed to change it in the first place.

Yeah, we basically just get a month an a half or more of panicked flip season chaos bullshit drama now. It just runs from November through mid December.

WooHoo.

I guess that's probably why they want to move it back. Coaches don't want to deal with that crap at all, but they really don't want to deal with it while they are in the season.

I think the original intentions for the early signing day were good, but it ended up harming more than it helped.  Probably time to make another change.

yeah, and do you blame them?

recruiting is a god damn joke. NFL is a tougher/more competitive job for a lot of reasons- less teams, can't schedule wins, best of the best players and coaches in the world, salary cap restrictions, better you do lower your draft picks are, etc., etc..

But- I think I'd much rather be an NFL coach because: no recruiting. Recruiting has got to be the biggest single pain in the ass part of being a college coach. I would hate the living shit out of it. I don't know how these guys do it.

LOL. True. And the money these coaches are making now is insane. $80-100 million deals being handed out like candy.

just don't know how they deal with having to grind year round kissing the ass of entitled snot nosed high school bastard kids and beg them and their families to come play for them. and then when they "commit" they have to recruit them even harder to keep them and make sure they don't flip. sounds like a complete f'ng headache.
