Minnesota (2-2, 4-3) at #24 Iowa (3-2, 6-2) Postgame

Many in Iowa consider Minnesota to be Iowa's biggest rival. I consider Minnesota to be Iowa's 2nd biggest rival after Wisconsin. Whatever others think, this game is for the greatest rivalry trophy in all of football.
So far, Minnesota is nearly as bad as Iowa at scoring points this season. Minnesota: 21.67. Iowa: 20.86.
Points scored by opponents: Iowa 14.86. Minnesota: 26.67.
Iowa's top 3 tight ends were out during the Wisconsin game. No other receivers have figured out how to consistently catch a ball, and Iowa is playing a second team QB.
Iowa used its strategy of get ahead one score then two against Wisconsin, run clock, defend, and walk off with a mild-hawk win.
Iowa needs a safety in this game, to win. So far this season Iowa has had only two safeties in seven games. Well maybe not. This game is in Iowa City, so there is an advantage. Iowa 19 - Minnesota 9.

Iowa coaches have been loyal to QB Deacon Hill since Cade McNamara was lost but you got to wonder how much longer they are going to stick with Hill or pull him for Joey Labas.

Hill is 2-0 as starter but was 6-21 against Purdue and 6-14 against Wisc.   How Iowa won either game just sums up the mystery that is Iowa.   All the offense needs is 1TD a game and defense and special teams will take care of the rest.

This could be big for both divisional races. It is increasingly difficult to come up with a realistic scenario that does NOT end with Iowa in Indianapolis.

At the same time, Iowa played Penn State while Minnesota plays both tOSU and M so in the event of a three-way tie in the B1G-E this will have an impact.

as a MN fan i can say I dont see this game as competitive.  Our last game to Michigan really hit the team hard as they were pushed around and forced into bad decisions

I am not sure what type of team will come out in Iowa but the pound the rock is as good against our defense as almost anything so it will feed right into Iowa's past two game strategies

Athan K is not the same QB that beat Wisconsin last year and with his play this year not sure what the future holds

iowa 21 Minn 6

One of PJ's consistent problems is the kicking game, and it's a thing that he has so far not addressed. The 2019 snow game vs. Wisconsin was viscerally undone by a return TD and another long return that set up another TD. Last year's Iowa game, their kickers and punters saw on film that the Gophers hadn't returned a kick all year. Guess what? Every kickoff and punt was pitching-wedged up, and the returners looked like they've never fielded a kick or punt in their life.  If we know anything about this Iowa club, is that they will feast on any mistakes or poor coverages in the kicking game. I fully expect to concede at least one score this way.

I'm fully expecting another 15-6 -esque score from this game.

In 2022, Iowa's Spencer Petras was 15/24 for 221 yards 0 int's, and  0 TDs in a 13-10 Iowa win over Minnesota. It is quite an astonishing passing performance considering Petras was the subject of so much criticism. Where is Spencer Petras when Iowa needs him (smile). His performance last year against Minnesota beats the heck out of Deacon Hill's 6/14 for 37 yds against Wisconsin a week ago.

I expect Iowa to come out passing this Saturday, as odd as it might seem, just because Minnesota and the rest of the nation expects Minnesota's only chance is to focus  its defense on defending the run.

The Iowa passing attack won't go much beyond the 8-minute mark of the 2nd Qtr. if Iowa has the lead. Then we'll go through the usual slugfest, with Iowa letting the air out of the ball. Even if Minnesota goes up by two scores, K.F. will adopt another strategy to win running the ball. We'll see what happens, soon enough.

It will be extremely difficult for Iowa to mount a passing game against Minnesota. The top 3 tight ends are not on the depth chart due to injury. Nos. 4 and 5 are a transfer portal scholarship player from Lafeyette, and a sophomore walk-on from Kansas.

I'd still double the TE

TE Erick All out for the year with torn ACL. that's a big blow to Iowa's offense that was already anemic, as he's a really good player. kid is a stud and was on the trajectory to be a surefire NFL draft pick TE after his breakout 2021 season, but he has just has had some awful injury luck the past two seasons. feel terrible for him, was hoping he'd re-take off at Iowa and get to the NFL.
