Michigan State (0-2, 2-3) at Maryland (1-1, 4-1) Post Game
« on: September 27, 2022, 07:41:12 AM »
The game is at 3:30 PM EDT Saturday on FS1.  Maryland is favored by a touchdown.  Is Sparty really as bad they looked at home against Minnesota?  I think so, the butt kicking by the Gophers was worse than the score indicated.  Michigan State's secondary was bad last year and I think they got worse.  Not a good situation going into a game with talented Maryland offense.  But Mel has got nothing to worry about for the rest of his life thanks to Spartan generosity.

a few folks think perhaps Minnesoota is just that good

to make Sparty look that bad

I expect Sparty to circle the wagons

I heard on WTKA that two starters in Sparty's defensive backfield are former Div. II players.

I'm interested in both sides of that question with this game:
  • Last week Minnesota looked much better and/or MSU looked much worse than most of us expected.
  • Last week Maryland looked much better and/or Michigan looked much worse than most of us expected.

This game, M/IA, and MN/PU will help clarify and explain what happened last week.

yeah, I don't. You don't fix the worst secondary in America and a bad OL in a week. Not sure you can even fix that during a season. That takes coaching changes and recruiting better talent and adding better players through the portal.

Maryland is at home and my guess is they throw a party all over the Spartans. Taulia will throw for 400 and Maryland will win by like 7-10 is my guess.

speaking of bad O-lines

I brought this up a year or two ago

O-line play seems to be down from past seasons and decades

Iowa's O-line has struggled the past 2 seasons, Wisconsin's is struggling this season, Nebraska's has struggled for 4 seasons
Horn fans say they haven't had a decent O-line in a long time

Minnesoota seems to have a good one.

Even CincyDawg says his Bulldogs are run blocking well

Whazzup?

More talented big uglies going to the defensive side?
Poor coaching is what I suspect

Taulia throws for 400 and Maryland only wins by 7-10?

Maryland defense isn't the best....they'll score 35-42 but give up 24-30

Ok. I was confused because when I read "throws for 400" I was thinking blowout.

He’s a game time time decision anyways. May not be fully healthy.

His backup looked decent once he got settled in.  Yes, it was garbage time, but he seems serviceable.

not to mention he came back into the game and played basically the rest of the game after he took that big shot....so my guess is he'll be good to go and the only reason they kept him out at the end because as you said...it was truly garbage time. Maryland was down 15 with under 2 mins to go in the game and no timeouts....they were in obvious passing every down situation which would just open him up to more shots and getting hurt more- they weren't going to win barring a miracle. Makes zero sense to let him stay in there just for Michigan to tee off on him and potentially get hurt even more seriously.

he'll be back imo.

They are better this year, but the number of injuries (7 defensive starters out, 6 in the front 7) has revealed the depth issues.  So yes, what is essentially the 2nd team defense this year is worse than the 1st team defense last year.  The OL is still a problem.  Dantonio was a phenomenal coach, but his recruiting the last couple years was horrendous, as it's showing.  There is an uptick, but how many jump ship if this is a 4-8 season?  One of the MSU bloggers pointed out that the highest rated recruit to play last week would be the 15th lowest rated recuit for OUS in the past 4 seasons.
