Percent of Undefeated Teams with 1st Loss
Week 0/1: 36.15% (47/130)
Week 2: 37.35% (31/83)
Week 3: 28.85% (15/52)
Week 4: 35.13% (13/37)

Maximum possible Undefeated Teams at End of the Regular Season:
8: The MAC can no longer have a team finish unbeaten. We can still finish with unbeaten champions in all leagues except the MAC and Sun Belt.

Week 4 Thoughts:
-I added the one loss column this week. Since the formation of the BCS, every single team with one exception to get into the BCS Championship/playoff bowls has had zero or 1 loss. The lone exception was 2007 LSU in what was probably the craziest year of college football I have personally witnessed. While the expansion to 4 will likely lead to more 2 loss teams in over the years, it is likely the vast majority of our 4 playoff bowl teams will be on the undefeated or 1-loss team lists at the end of the year. On the Group of 5 side, every team from outside the AQ/power 5 conferences to make it since the start of the BCS has had 0 or 1 loss except Boise State in 2014. The committee will be far more likely to award a 2-loss team than the polls, but again, the majority of team making it will be on one of these lists.

-Lots of teams seemed to struggle this week but most favored ones prevailed.

-Our biggest shake-up on the chase for the Rose and Sugar Bowls was in the Big 12. TCU beating Oklahoma State leaves the Horned Frogs and Oklahoma as the clear-cut favorites in the Big 12.

-In the SEC, we wondered if there might be a changing of the guard for the season of stronger teams. This week dispelled most those thoughts with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky following up good wins with losses.

-The Group of 5 race is looking more and more like San Diego State vs. American champion to me. That really does seem to be all the Mountain West is competing with though as everyone else in the conference now has 2 losses. The only other undefeated team from outside those 2 conferences in the Group of 5 conferences is UTSA in Conference USA. Their win over Baylor helps, but only if Baylor wins a few games (they are getting closer). The last two undefeated MAC teams lost last week and while Toledo’s loss to Miami (FL) wasn’t terrible, I think it will be very difficult for a 1-loss MAC team to get in (remember last year there was even thoughts of the committee putting in a 2 loss Navy over undefeated Western Michigan). The only one I think they really have left in the running without looking through the rest of the schedules is probably Northern Illinios as the win over Nebraska helps. Troy is the only one left in the Sun Belt who I think could get into the same shape as Northern Illinois and it would take a win vs. LSU next week.

-There are no remaining possible games between winless teams this year in conference (Conference USA has two teams, but they are in opposite divisions and do not play this year). There is one game between winless teams possible next month though with independent UMass scheduled to play Georgia Southern.

Week 5 Thoughts:
-There are 4 games between undefeated teams next week with 2 of them on Friday: Miami (FL) vs. Duke (Friday), USC @ Washington State (Friday), Memphis @ Central Florida, and Clemson @ Virginia Tech

-Weird game: Winless Florida State plays at undefeated Wake Forest. (Florida State has only played 2 games due to Irma).

Looks like most of the winless teams are in different conferences.

Two are in CUSA, but different divisions.
