Mega-Conference Scheduling issues
« on: November 03, 2023, 10:27:28 AM »
In the ACC this week there is a very important game between second place Louisville and third place VaTech.  Not only is VaTech in third place but they are actually only 1/2 game out of second (3-1 to Louisville's 4-1).

This surprised me because, quite frankly, VaTech sucks.  They got run off the field in Piscataway and lost at home to one of the worst teams in the B1G, Purdue.  How is a team that bad doing so well in the ACC?  Well, we could pick on the weakness of the ACC and that would be fun and not entirely untrue but that isn't the whole story.  A big part of the reason is that VaTech's ACC schedule has been ridiculously weak so far and doesn't get much better.  Here is VaTech's schedule compared to the ACC standings:

  • 6-0 FSU:  L by 22
  • 4-1 L'ville:  11/4
  • 3-1 VaTech:  N/a
  • 3-2 GaTech:  DNP
  • 3-2 UNC:  DNP
  • 3-2 Dook:  DNP
  • 2-2 Miami:  DNP
  • 2-2 BC:  11/11
  • 2-2 NCST:  11/18
  • 2-4 Clemson:  DNP
  • 1-3 Pitt:  W by 17
  • 1-3 UVA:  11/25
  • 1-5 Wake:  W by 17
  • 0-4 Cuse:  W by 28
The Hokies either have played or are scheduled to play the worst four and six of the worst eight teams in the ACC but only two of the top six and four of the top nine.

The Hokies play basically all of the worst teams in the ACC and miss most of the best teams so now they are likely one upset win over L'Ville from skating into the ACCCG despite being a crappy team.

This is a conference size problem.  Back when the Big11Ten had 11 teams and an 8-game schedule we were missing two of the possible 10 opponents.  That usually didn't make all that big of a difference.  In the current ACC each of the 14 teams plays only eight of a possible 13 so they are missing five or almost 40% of their potential opponents.

Next year when the B1G has 18 teams and a nine game schedule, we'll be even worse.  Each team will only face nine of a possible 17 opponents and will miss eight of 17 or 47%.  At that point it will be not only possible but likely that we'll end up with a significantly inferior team in the CG while I significantly superior team is excluded solely due to the two teams' vastly differing SoS within the league.

Yes, and it's true in the SEC as well, and as you note, about to be truer.

Meh.

I don't think this will be a thing by the end of the year.  It's as much of WHEN they're playing the worst teams.  They'll lose to the top 2 and 2 of 3 vs BC, NCST, and UVA.

This looks legit as a snapshot, but I doubt it's actually the case.

Have the top 9 miss all but 1 of the bottom 9, and vice versa.

Better games for ratings with the top teams all playing each other, and wild CCG races with a tall midget feasting on all of the cup cakes in order to sneak into the CCG.
