We all know by this point in the season we really don't know much for certain.  If you compare week 3 rankings with final any year you see anomalies.
for sure. Georgia is pretty much the only team I'm sure about. they shouldn't even do team rankings til about week 6 imo.

UGA has looked solid, so far, emphasis on so far.  They have Kent State tomorrow so we won't learn anything from that I suspect.

But they have some definite possible trips down the road of course.

I think we know enough about the top.  We know who will be in or nearly in the CFP.  Will a currently unranked team go 9-3 and reach the top 12ish?  Sure

It's still a mystery how good Michigan's defense is.
This is the biggest question imo. I think Maryland has a decent offense so we’ll learn a lot about the defense. I also think Michigan’s offense is a well oiled Machine with JJ out there so I expect Michigan to put up a lot of points. The closeness of this one will be determined by the D. I expect Michigan to cover.

I do have some reservations about Michigan's offense.  The OL needs to get healthy and better.  RT Jones is a work in progress.  I also think they need a big RB like Haskins.  I haven't drank the Corum is a good inside runner KoolAid.  Maybe Edwards can do it once he's healed up?

***BIG TEN GAME OF THE WEEK***
Maryland Terrapins (3-0) at #4 Michigan Wolverines (3-0)
NOON - Ann Arbor, MI - FOX
Good September Maryland is tired at this point, we know they are going to collapse once the clock strikes October.  Problem is, it's still September.  Michigan's defense lost a lot from last year, and literally faced 3 of the 10 worst teams in the FBS according to SP+.  All that means is that we don't KNOW anything.  But we can THINK anything we want, and I think Michigan's defense will be fine.  It might be their worst defense in the past few years, but I think this will be their best offense, maybe ever.  Donovan Edwards, who I've said before is a cheat code, is a massive loss.  I think he's the most talented offensive weapon in the Big Ten, but against the defense, I don't think I care.  I think Michigan would have to be down 14-0 for Jim Harbaugh to even consider going back to McNamera, but with him hurt, there is nobody looking over McCarthy's shoulder.  Might he throw a pair of dumb interceptions?  Sure.  Might he also throw for 350 yards?  Absolutely.  Two turnovers, Michigan should be fine.  Once you start getting to -3 or greater, well now we've got a game.  Maryland is excelling at dominating the takeaway game.  The Terps are also giving the ball away, but they are playing loose on defense.  That will likely mean a couple of giveaways for J.J. McCarthy in his first meaningful start, but it will also mean a couple of chances to exploit.  Mike Locksley has switched to a more balanced approach this year, which means if this is still a game in the second quarter, the Terps are more comfortable playing it out.  Maryland is averaging nearly 8 fewer pass attempts this year.  I think Michigan jumps out quickly.  I don't see how Maryland stops them.  That puts Maryland back into a pass first offense, and while they have the receivers to win that battle, I don't see them having the defense to come from behind in Ann Arbor.
MICHIGAN 41, MARYLAND 22

I think that @ELA 's analysis is, as usual, spot on. I see this as the kind of game where Maryland really needs some combination of:

  • An off-the-charts good game for themselves, and/or
  • A just dreadfully awful game by Michigan, and/or
  • A major advantage in turnover margin (I'm thinking +3 or so, like he said).

Honestly, I don't even think that any one of the above would be enough. They need two out of three.

You are just some kind of worry wart my dude. This OL will wind up being even better than last years. The OL is just fine. They've been dealing with minor injuries to a couple of starters. Nothing major. They'll all be good to go for B1G play. The only weak spot on the entire offense that I've seen if you want to call it that is Trente Jones at RT. He's a brand new starter- he's given up some pressures in pass pro- but has been a mauler in run game. The OL spots from LT-LG-C-RG are ROCK freaking solid- best that Michigan has had in literally like DECADES. Ryan Hayes, Trevor Keegan, and Zak Zinter are all gonna be BETTER this year and they got a major upgrade at center with Olu Oluwatimi- dude might be the best center in America.

As far as their RB's go- well that's just silly talk. They have an INSANE RB backfield with Corum & Edwards and CJ Stokes is going to be WAY better than his recruit rankings- just like Haskins was.

This offense was missing it's best skill player period last year- WR Ronnie Bell- dude is back and working his way back into form and looks excellent. Their WR/TE talent and depth is fantastic.

And to top it all off- they got a MAJOR upgrade at the most important spot on the entire team- QB. JJ McCarthy is going to be a flat out STUD. Don't believe me just watch.

I recall some "analysis" of this ilk last year where Michigan was a beast at every position.

That was after the "fore Harbaugh now" threads of course.

YAWN.

Blake Corum is by far the most explosive RB they've had in decades and he ran for like 50 yards just shy of 1k yards while splitting carries and missing 3-4 games with a high ankle sprain. I've been watching Michigan football forever.....Donovan Edwards just might be the most talented RB they've ever had. Dude was OMERG 5 STARZZZ for a reason. Dude was just a true frosh last year and behind Haskins and Corum- two pretty damn good older players. He will be unleashed this year. They are A OK at RB.

Ronnie Bell is the best WR on their team. By far. They were without him the entire year last year. He's back. Their WR/TE depth behind him is excellent. Best it's been since Harbaugh has been in Michigan. LG Trevor Keegan was a RS Soph and first time starter last year. RG Zak Zinter was a RS Frosh and first time starter last year. Stands to reason those guys will only get better, NO? And they were pretty fkn good last year. Their new center Olu Oluwatimi was the runner up to the Rimmington Award and an All-American last year. Their center last year Varstardis was a solid college player- but nowhere in Oluwatimi's universe as an individual player. The interior of their OL is going to be better than it was a year ago. Can't remember the last time they had an interior OL that freaking experienced and talented. Been forever. Have to go back to the Lloyd Carr days.

Last but not least- the most important position on the field- the main man pulling the trigger- is going to be A LOT better than what they had last year. JJ McCarthy is just flat out different- that's why he beat Cade McNamara- a pretty decent starting SENIOR B1G level QB that just QB'd this program to a B1G 'chip and beat the Buckeyes last year. I've been watching Michigan football forever. Only QB you can compare JJ to on a talent level is Drew Henson. JJ is not quite Drew Henson level- but damn he is close.

In summation: their offense will be A OK as long as Harbaugh stays out of the way. It's the defense that I am worried about.

The thing is when a poster consistently uses dramatic and exaggerated terms to describe a thing it gets boring fast.  Carry on.

Everything is either a superlative or a dramatic tragic event or situation.
