I gotta share this, here, too... I'm in awe (in the true sense of the word) of this little girl's fight.

If my dad were still around he'd say Semper Fi.

Dad served from HS Graduation in 1958 through 1961.  Dad was lucky that way, Korea ended in 1953 when he was just a kid and by the time Vietnam got geared up in 1965 he was exempt from the Draft due to prior service.  He was in 8" Howitzers at a base called Twentynine Palms in SoCal and he always joked that he "played cops and robbers in the desert for three years" because there wasn't much going on at the time so they basically spent all their time shooting at rocks as practice in case someday the rocks were replaced with enemy guns, tanks, or formations that were shooting back.

@847badgerfan , your son will probably appreciate this:
When my dad, brother, and I went to the tOSU/MN game in Minneapolis dad wanted to stop in Antigo, Wisconsin to see the Bradley Funeral Home.  Bradley was one of the flagraisers pictured in the famous photograph and he ran a funeral home there for many years.  His family still does (or at least did a few years ago).  Anyway, they have the original mock-up of what became the National Marine Corps monument (the sculptor's scaled down version) on display in their Funeral Home and we stopped to see it.

Twenty-Nine Palms is informally known as "The Stumps".

I've been there, it's a bleak area.

Yeah, dad took us there when we went to the Rose Bowl in 1997 (1996 season).  Twenty-Nine Palms is definitely a misleading name because there aren't 29 of any type of plants growing there.

Back when my dad was there the US Military was preparing to fight WWIII in the Fulda Gap so they didn't have much use for a Desert Base.  Dad's unit was there because he was in 8" Howitzers which were too big and too long-ranged to shoot on smaller bases.  Twenty-Nine Palms is HUGE so they could shoot them there no problem.

More recently the base is MUCH busier because a lot of America's recent conflicts have been fought in deserts so they do a LOT of desert warfare preparation and training there.
