This set the tone for a magical night in 2010. It's also the last time UW beat the Evil Empire.

Ah, at first glance, I assumed that was Lee Evans'(?) long catch in 2003

Nobody can wear #83 in Madison. It's retired. #83 was Allen Schafer, a freshman QB in 1944. He collapsed on the field and died an hour later, in a game with Iowa. He was 17.

Shafer got back to his feet and signaled to the bench that he was OK. Coach Harry Stuhldreher ignored the signal and sent in a substitute. The young quarterback walked off the field with two teammates supporting him. When he got to the sidelines, Shafer collapsed again. He remained conscious but he died an hour later in Wisconsin General Hospital.

"At the game, none of us knew what had happened," Roger Laubenheimer said. "It was only later that we heard he had died. It was a shock. I had a date that night, and we sat around in gloom all night. We didn't go anywhere.

"It was a real shock to the whole campus, community and state when this happened."
An autopsy revealed that Shafer had died of pulmonary edema, hemorrhage of the lungs, caused by a violent blow. When Shafer received the blow remains a mystery.

"They reviewed the films, and they never did pinpoint any type of a hit that may have precipitated what happened," Laubenheimer said. "We all looked at the films, and nobody saw anything. And I don't recall anything during the game where he was particularly hit. Nor does anybody else remember any unusual circumstances.
