#10 Iowa (1-0) at #9 Iowa State (1-0) Game Week
« on: September 05, 2021, 06:11:00 PM »
Iowa showed limited offensive spark against Indiana. But, they didn't have to show much. Iowa's brand is to try to go up early by at least a couple scores in the 1st half, and then let the air out of the ball on both sides of the ball, and work the clock.

Iowa played 10 different O-Lineman against Indiana. There is quite a competition going on for the starting OL spots, except at center, where Tyler Linderbaum is expected to be All American.

Iowa State squeaked by UNI 16-10 on 9/4/2021, while Iowa's defense dominated Indiana 34-6 scoring two pick-sixes.

Iowa State has so many returning starter-stars. Prior to the Indiana game I would have projected Iowa State as the Cy-Hawk winner. I am not so sure, now. Iowa played well against a ranked opponent; Iowa State risked defeat through UNI's final drive.

Iowa State has the betting line for the Cy-Hawk game at about -3.5 to -4.

Before Matt Campbell the smart money was on Iowa St.

Now, just the opposite.

Of course not. However, if you look at the trends, it is obvious.

The annual series was revived in 1977, two years before the Hayden Fry era. They split the series in 77 and 78.

In the Hayden Fry era from 77-98 he went 16-4, but rattled off a 15 game winning streak along the way. (He won his first cyhawk game, but then dropped three straight. Then the 15 game winning streak. His fourth and final loss was in his final Cyhawk game).

Then Ferentz in the pre Matt Campbell era from 1998-2015 was 8-10 vs Iowa St, when Iowa St was a perennial 2 win team. It was almost unbelievable how much he struggled in that series. That is until Matt Campbell came along, when a much lower bar of ineptitude in the series was established.

The Ferentz-Campbell era of the rivalry has been all Iowa. 4-0, to build on a 5 game winning streak overall in the series.

So Ferentz has passed his "can't beat your rival" syndrome onto Matt Campbell, but it mutated along the way where it became an
'every year no matter what" sorta thing instead of a "lose more than you win" type scenario.

Lower bar of ineptitude? Leave your watering holes out of this and have some one get your electric football set fixed 😎

Well if I were to play devil's advocate I could point out that Ferentz lost his first five cyhawks. So maybe after this year's Cyclone shellacking, Campbell can turn it around and go 7-5 in the series over the next 12 games. If he is still here after that, he might even rattle off a five game winning streak of his own; mostly at the expense of some future Iowa coach who is otherwise doing pretty well outside of the cyhawk series.

Turns out this game will be the site of ESPN GameDay which is a repeat of GameDay coming to Ames in 2019 for the Iowa-ISU game.

The 2019 game was a disaster production wise.  The game was delayed multiple times due to thunderstorms,  finally finishing late in the evening with Iowa rallying for a close 18-17 victory. The Iowa victory was sealed by a ISU player running into their own punt returner, causing the punt returner to fumble the punt, killing ISU's last chance to win the game.

Meanwhile the situation was chaotic once the game was finally over.  Nobody knew where the busses were parked.  After being picked on by ISU fans all day,  the Iowa band escalated things by arrogantly trying to march through a crowd of ISU fans playing the Iowa fight song, the ISU fans started pushing the band and a small fight broke out.

Anyway, the word is that the Iowa band will not be making the trip to Ames this year.
