I always considered Dantonio to be one of the better coaches going.

He was a very good program CEO, which is important.  But his loyalty to bad assistants is crippling the program.  I don't blame him for the weird offensive playcalling, but I do for not doing anything about it.

He’s a great defensive coach and while he doesn’t recruit highly ranked classes every year he’s got a great eye for talent and developing said talent. Especially on defense. His hit rate on recruits is better than most.

If he was at a helmet that recruited itself to a degree like all helmets do- and if he was willing to hand over the offensive keys entirely to an innovative OC he’d be a monster.

Yeah, I'm not saying he needs to be fired or anything, it just sort of feels like a Frank Beamer trajectory.  Higher highs than the program had in a very, very long time, followed by a period of contentment.  Like Beamer, I don't think he'll ever fade so much to warrant firing, but he'll just kind of be content to be a 7-5ish type team, and keep his buddies employed.

I do wonder how attractive the job is to whoever is next in say 2021 versus 2015.

Heckuva coach. Always so close but no cigar. Carr lucked into ‘97 that was in large part supercharged by maybe the greatest DB ever in Woodson- but apart from that they are like the same guy. Not truly elite coaches like Meyer or Saban or Spurrier or Bowden- but on that next level below those guys.

He’s the best thing that’s happened to MSU in ages. Really impressive what he was able to do to there. Brought them back from the dead really. 

Beamer is a great comparison actually. Never thought of that one, but it fits.

I think the job would be in demand for sure. He’s made it a legit big time program and he’s shown what can be done there.

How about the Packers?

Aaron looks in good spirits this offseason. A relaxed, “jolly Rodgers” bodes well for the Packers going into the season. However the pressure is all on Aaron because the two primary excuses his fanboys have his behind when it comes to Aaron’s past two years of underwhelming play have been addressed: 1) McCarthy & GM Ted Thompson are gone after Aaron spent several offseasons lobbing low-key criticism at both, and 2) the defense is completely revamped and filled out.

Aaron has no excuses now.

I think the Packers are getting past their recent problems save Aaron’s thin skin.

How about the Memphis Tigers? With their hardest OOC opponent being Ole Miss and missing UCF in conference play, they have the schedule to make a big run and sustain a season long Top 25 ranking. Brady White returns as QB, likely will post big numbers, but the question comes down to another year of iffy defense that under Coach Norvell is consistently unable to close out leads. And for Norvell, at 26-14 during his first three seasons, he’s performed well and for some reason isn’t receiving the expected attention for the season’s end of bigger job openings.

Memphis is an excellent catch.  I'm wondering also about Cincinnati.  They had a nice year last year, quietly, with Fickell.  DO they continue?  If so, does he going coaches on the retro-hot seat?

He's been on the Tressel friends and family plan with regards to his ACs consistently since his stint at Cincinnati, no?
