I'm the lone vote for 6.

Face it, Playoff Expansion is coming. But why rush to 8 teams when 6 solves most of the issues at hand. I also don't consider "going back" as an option.
The 5 P5 champions (I like the must be ranked in the top 12 condition) + 1 at large.

No special spot for G5 or Notre Dame, but if they are the top at large they are eligible.

6 allows for an elite non-champion to participate.
6 allows for each region to send a representative, with none of the big boys getting skipped over (unless their champion is vastly inferior.)
6 allows 2 teams to get a bye encouraging elite play to continue through the end of season.
6 checks all the boxes for me, except for allowing the G5 to auto-participate, but how often is a G5 team worthy of even being considered? And if they are worthy of being considered there is an open spot.

I'm not sure why people keep saying you can't go back.  Yes you can, the conferences are just bigger.  
The B10 and PAC get the band back together in the Rose.
The SEC champ goes to the Sugar.
I'd sort of squint and instead of the SWC champ to the Cotton, I see the BigXII champ to the Fiesta.
ACC champ to the Orange.

Then you get your big-boy at-large teams filling in, creating awesome matchups.


And for me, personally, you have a +1 option in your back pocket, on a rotating location, as needed.

No, you can't. Follow the money, no one is going to pay more for less, and that is what "going back" means. Someone will have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars more than ESPN/FOX is paying now to NOT have a championship game. Not going happen. I also would prefer a return to traditional B10/P12 Rose Bowl match up on News Year Day, not going to happen.

If college football was my primordial soup and I could do what I wanted... I would separate G5 from P5. Mush around the P5 until it was the Mega 4 (M4) Conferences. Have semi-uniform scheduling, each team has to play 10 M4 games. Let each new super conference send it's representative of it's choosing, (so the SEC could send 'bama instead of it's champion...) to a 4 team playoff. (Maybe one that Features B10/P12 in the Rose and SEC/ACC in the Sugar, then a National Championship bidded out like the Superbowl.)

Will this happen? Doubtful, only if the money is increased enough to move Texas/Oklahoma out of the 12, and the other "12ers" scurry into existing conferences instead of trying promote less valuable properties. And... the P5(M4) and the G5 conclude there is more money to be had be separating (P5 can get more but it would prolly destroy the G5.) And... if the SEC/ACC think there is more money in playing an extra P5(M4) team instead of a body bag (sharing 7 game revenue, or each team keeping it's own from 14 games.) Even then, there would need to be proof that 4 team playoff is more valuable than an 8 team playoff. (Straight up It's not, but we can argue about diminished revenue from the regular season.) Pipe dream, not going to happen. Going back to the less valuable way things were, not going to happen.

Really my entire premises is Playoff Expansion is coming, can we slow down and see if 6 teams works, before blasting straight to 8.

Making this large assumption that this diversity of opinion is somewhat reflective of the larger population, I note that this is a hindrance to having further change.  You need, not unanimity of course, but a fairly decent majority opinion that X would be better than Y in order to move to X.

In this case, most people don't like Y, but they prefer X, A, B, C, .... 

So, nothing happens.

It's hard to envision an 8 team playoff that would NOT make more money.

Okay, so we have the 3 playoff games now, with all the eyeballs and money on them.  

We all agree the other bowls have suffered, in importance, eyeballs, and money.  Aside from the +1 add-on, let's look at this past year, using my old-school vote:
Rose Bowl:  
2 Ohio State (13-0)
6 Oregon (11-2)
.
Sugar Bowl:
1 LSU (13-0)
At-large
.
Orange Bowl:
3 Clemson (13-0)
At-Large
.
Fiesta Bowl:
4 Oklahoma (12-1)
At-Large
................................................. ............
Okay, so we have the RB, with 1 team playing for a shot at the national championship.  And we have 2 others who are undefeated, playing for all the marbles (potentially).  
Going down the playoff committee rankings, we have Georgia at 5, Baylor 7, Wisconsin 8, Florida 9.
I'll go with Georgia to the Orange, Wisconsin to the Fiesta, and while Baylor would earn that trip to the Sugar, I'm scared they'd grab 15 Notre Dame.  Actually, if I've learned anything over the years, the Fiesta would take ND, moving Wisconsin to the Sugar and Baylor being SOL.

RB is 2 vs 6

SB is 1 vs 8

OB is 3 vs 5

FB is 4 vs 15
....................................
We look at these, compare them to the 4-team playoff, and scoff.  But you have as many teams vying or the NC with a real chance here.  And if 2 of the undefeateds win, with the +1 in place, they could then play it out.

Yes, if 1,2, and 3 win, one is screwed anyway, but their game vs #5 is a chance to get in the top 2.  Clemson spanking Georgia would move them over OSU if they win a close one with Oregon, doesn't it?  

And THIS is the thing - all of the talking.  The what-ifs.  The arguing.  The mythic status of the NC.  If Clemson is upset, we have LSU vs OSU.  It's nearly a 4-team playoff, under the guise of the old way.

Rose Bowl:

Okay, so the RB is lame (relatively), but we have an undefeated #3 ND, 5 Georgia, 7 Michigan, 8 UCF, 10 Florida to place.
I think ND easily goes to the Sugar here, Georgia to the Orange, and Michigan to the Fiesta.  

The exciting part here is we have 3 teams who could win the NC.  Alabama or ND would win it with a win and Clemson loss.  Clemson would have to win and then play the Bama/ND winner.

This way, you get the big-time great teams spread out a little, with the +1 aspect still cleaning things up a bit.
