Tucker Carlson is a self-important bloviating blowhard as well.  He's just not as dumb as Ted Cruz.  It's a very low bar.

I don't think it's a gotcha question. And I'll tell you why.

Ted Cruz is a US Senator with actual power- who could potentially vote on taking this country to war with Iran and sending it's soldiers off to die. 

If the man is going to have a fucking boner for a decade plus to push this country into a hot war with Iran like he has- he should know about the country. What the population is- how it's split along ethnic and religious lines- it's military capability, it's geography/terrain- what are the plans with the governing of the country after you topple the regime. He needs to have some grasp on what he's voting for and what this war would look like. He has none of that. Absolutely none. He's a chickenhawk war hawk who doesn't give a fuck because it's not his kids that will go over there and die.

I'd agree with you it's a gotcha if it's just two pundits bloviating- but he's not just some pundit arguing for one way or the other. He's a fucking US Senator that may have to vote on taking this country to another disastrous war in the middle east.

Debating 101, get your opponent off kilter.  Cruz's response was awful, albeit inconsequential, and from that point on he never collected himself, and instead admitted to essentially taking money from a foreign lobby, and that the US was involved in this.

That's not the gotcha.  If he had answered coherently, and then not went on to not be able to answer a whole bunch of other far more important questions, nobody would care.

Sure Tucker is a blowhard.  It's the only way to stay relevant as a media member now.  But it doesn't mean he's not also good at what he does.  I disagree with him on a LOT, but he knows his shit
