US Citizen Detained by ICE Despite Birth Certificate Freed

I have also been detained in error.  I am also an American citizen.

I didn't like it either -- but shit happens.  The mistake was corrected.

Brightline lost nearly $493 million during the first nine months of 2024, its latest financial report from December says, even as it brought in nearly $138 million from ticket sales and other sources of money.

Passenger rail is heavily subsidized in most of the world, so this should come as no surprise.

It is indeed.  I often see stuff on FB about "Why does China have HSR and we don't?"

The reason offered is usually billionaires something something.

Anyway, Brightline claims to be building a line from LA to LV, which might make a bit of sense, maybe.  I wouldn't put a dollar on it.

My wife wanted to take Canada rail through the Rockies, neat idea, the cost was absurdly high.

Americans love their cars, and they like to fly.

Both are cheaper than rail.

Of course rail is gonna fail.

The Acela line in the NE supposedly runs in the black.  Go figure, high density large cities with railroad stations amidst said large cities and it work pretty well apparently.

I feel like I was talking about this somewhere, maybe on here a few years ago, but the only situations where things like that work are ones where a car is grotesquely inconvenient.

If my company charged for parking, which it probably could, I would take a dinky little train to the office every day. But we have a parking deck, so I don’t.

They may have loved the thought of cars, but it was statutory changes after WWII that made their proliferation possible.  A lot of discussions and hand-wringing nowadays about density and sprawl is 75+ years too late.

I've noticed that the parking charge would have to be very, very expensive to get people onto American transit.

I took the train to my downtown Chicago office every Friday. Not only was parking way more expensive, but I could get there in 35 minutes on the express train from Palatine, versus 90+ minutes on the Tollway/Kennedy.

the only route Brightline is making any money on right now is Miami/FtLaud/WPB to Orlando and vice versa.

they spent ton of money opening up stations in Aventura and Boca and no one really uses it from Miami to WPB and in between because you aren't really saving any time that you would driving using it unless you're using it during rush hour traffic hours- and it just flat out costs too much to make it worth peoples while.

Brightline speeds aren't fast enough either. Locally it only tops 79mph and in stretches to Orlando it gets up to 125 mph but that's still pretty damn slow compared to other HSR in Europe or Asia that are topping 180-280mph.

I like the Brightline a lot, but they charge too much to make it worth using locally and for what they charge to go round trip from WPB to Orlando I'd rather drive to buy an airline ticket from PBI to MCO. I've gotten round trip non-stop flights for basically same price or little more than what Brightline charges to go roundtrip from downtown West Palm to Orlando.

REALLY cool service and really neat, but not that practical and costs too much.

There are places where rail makes a great deal of sense, and there are places where it doesn't.
FYI--and I'm sure you know this--the airline industry and the auto industry also receive significant subsidies in the creation and maintenance of infrastructure.
This isn't a one-size-fits-all issue; it's about finding the right solutions for the right places. That definitely includes rail, but it isn't just rail.

Brightline has great trains and super nice train stations- just don't go fast enough from South FL to Orlando and costs too much for anyone to use locally and not saving any time locally using it really.

A high speed rail line from LA to LV could make sense though.
