I see in the title the term "apolitical", so OAM couldn't possibly be referring to something political.

No one has issued a directive to change anything for me, but..........

If I lose my work-from-the golf course-Friday afternoons, I'm not gonna be happy.
A year before I retired, my company said we were going to have to start coming into the office 3 days a week.  I turned in my 2 week notice the next day.  My boss' boss call me the following day and asked what it would take to get me to stay.  I said, I would come into the office once or twice a month, but I won't come in 3 days a week.  They relented.  It is nice to be needed and have some power.

This was absolutely the prevailing trend in high tech and many other industries, pre-COVID.

Now a lot of people are doing a 180 on it.

I will say that for innovation, nothing beats in-person meetings, and usually in less formal settings.  Water-cooler talk, among other things.  There's just no substitute for it via Zoom/Teams.  Lot of studies about it amongst the MBA types.

My clients are in Texas and Colorado.  I wasn't meeting face to face with them pre-COVID.  Now I just don't have to worry about hanging around the office until 6:30 in case I get a Denver call

omg it's as if funding, arming, training, propping up Al-Qaeda terrorists and their off-shoots in Syria to overthrow a government the US doesn't like (at the behest of Israel) wasn't a truly fucking awful idea that was only ever going to end in disaster....if only any prominent Democrats (at the time) called out Obama's dirty war in Syria for the obviously insane bullshit it was....oh wait...

I'm always fascinated by the tradeoffs here. I've seen that in-person stuff can absolutely get things flowing, with the right people. But it also comes at higher costs and sometimes lost efficiency.

My company is hybrid. They tried to order workers back, and that was a dud (lots of people are valuable and didn't want to start commuting 45-plus minutes each way). I go into the office as I please, but I run a fully remote team. They also closed a bunch of offices, which made in-person non-existent in some places.

There are also plenty of studies that show that in-person relationships and experiences make workers many times more likely to help one another, compared to entirely online/email/telephone/zoom relationships.  Even meeting a person once in-person, compared to entirely online, increases this cooperational correlation.

There's no doubt there's a lot of value to being in-person for many types of jobs.  And sometimes the interactive elements might come at the expense of efficiency, but some really smart and wealthy tech giants are making bets that the incremental value in innovation and fast-tracking due to personal interactions, will offset the efficiency deficits and even increase total value.

I don't think folks need to be in-office 5 days per week to obtain those benefits.  But they DO need to be in-office at the same time, which a hybrid schedule where some people come in MWTh and some people come in TThF, isn't really going to achieve the desired results.

I get a bit amused at the labs we see on TV, they really aren't like that, duh, and one thing needed is analytical equipment, which is where the dollars start flowing.
