Don't spend that $5,000 DOGE dividend just yet.
The NY Times examined that "wall of receipts" supposedly proving the $55 billion in savings dug up by Musk and his minions. Turns out the math was a little iffy.
Of course, the NYT is "fake news" so we can go on believing whatever Karoline Leavitt says in the WH briefing room.
    Key takeaway:

But the math ... is marred with accounting errors, incorrect assumptions, outdated data and other mistakes, according to a New York Times analysis of all the contracts listed. While the DOGE team has surely cut some number of billions of dollars, its slapdash accounting adds to a pattern of recklessness by the group, which has recently gained access to sensitive government payment systems.

I don't know what to believe at this point.  IF all this really turns out to be much ado about very little, well, it won't look good for DJT.
the DOGE dividend is silly PR. never would get off the ground- and any money they did theoretically save should go right towards paying down the federal debt imo.

a lot of this stuff is still in the courts and has yet to be litigated. my hope is they can cut what they can but more importantly they can push Congress to act and cut spending and actually do some oversight when it comes to wasteful spending & fraud.

Pfizer actually does sell quite a bit more "stuff" than just a COVID vaccine.  They were a sizeable operation in 2019 with $16 billion in net income before COVID.  That did bump up to $31 billion in 2022, in large part due to the vaccine.  So, maybe about $15 billion relates to vaccines sales.

In full disclosure, I've owned PFE stock for a number of years, somewhat to my dismay.

I am looking for the people who did the study- and I believe they estimated $35 billion of Pfizer's $53 billion in profits came from COVID drugs. Basically 100% of Moderna and BioNTech's profits came from COVID drugs during that time obviously- as they were the only products those companies made at that time. Moderna made about $20 billion in profits and BioNTech did as well those years. That's about $75 billion right there between those 3 alone. In profits.

I don't read weird internet rumors. I deal in straight facts and straight cash homie, as the great Randy Moss would say.

I have no idea what DOGE has actually done, how they've done it, if the math is correct, and also at this point there's good reason not to have seen receipts, yet.

What I do know is I trust the NYT zero, anymore.  They're not just wrong at every turn, they're exactly wrong, on so many stories the last many years.  You can't do that by accident.  The chances are zero.  They're not good faith actors.

It's to the point where if they say it, I'm just about happy to blindly believe the opposite.

Which to my earlier point somewhere, is to their discredit, because they have no way of reaching someone like me now if they see an actual problem that people should know about which they should be reporting.  I'm not listening anymore.

I mentioned somewhere else to you a couple weeks ago, I have a few rules I think are very reasonable for gathering "good" information in today's world, where it's certainly not easy.  I wouldn't claim it to be foolproof, but just using some general epistemic principles, similar to how historians "know" history reliably, is a good way to go.  I'm not exposed to many "news" sources.  There's just too many anymore.  I did track the NYT for several years, and they're on my BS list.

It's a slow process, and I wish I could say I have a list, even a small one, of "reliable" news.  But it's more like piecing together things from here and there.  That obviously leaves me with less time and consequently more uncertainty on many things.  I try to remember that when I inevitably get fired up about something.....I think I know something but I haven't yet met my own standards.  Whatever.  I'm just saying, whether they're right about DOGE accounting or not, they've given me no reason to trust them lately.

I somewhat "trust" the NYT in some areas, but I certainly realize they can, um, bias their reportage.  So, I check anything of import with other sources.  I figure if the NYT reports where the stock market closed, it's accurate enough.  I do think their choices for headlines and stories to ignore or bury on page 18 are ... unbalanced.

I don't see how a President can really "save" money by not spending it when Congress authorized the spending.  It's called impoundment.  If it happens.

A President can see that it is spent less wastefully, but it's still being spent.

An increasing number of things are being litigated as we speak.  The courts will eventually settle what the executive branch can and can't do here.

100%. US votes against these and has every single time UN has tried to write a mean letter to Israel.

US talks out of both sides of it's mouth constantly- it cares nothing for "democracy" or "international rules based order" that's all just bs/pr/propaganda for the public.

US joins Russia to vote against UN resolution condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine | CNN Politics
as you said this is meaningless and I swear to Christ part of me thinks this is just Trump giving Europe and Zelenskyy a giant middle finger for all the back talk and insubordination they've thrown the US's way in the past week.

I am just about fucking DONE with both. Have been done for a long time with the EU and it's insanely repressive radical governments and their free loading of their defense off the back of the US military. And now with Zelenskyy trying to publicly embarrass a sitting US President by leaking talks about a mineral rights deal, talking shit about a US President's "web of disinformation" and now saying that Ukraine doesn't owe the US a single dollar in repayment.....yeah that guy can go fuck himself. He's acting like an ungrateful spoiled child who fails to realize that he would've been assassinated and Ukraine would've been completely annihilated if the US hadn't blown up the NordStream pipeline, provided Ukraine with shitloads of military training, intelligence, and military planning/logistics, pumped hundreds of billions of dollars of advanced weapons and financial aid into Ukraine to prop up it's government and military. The fucking balls on this guy.

My wife got called for jury duty, and had the ideal excuse, clearly listed as an excuse, filled out the forms, got them notarized, sent them in, and got an email "Denied" show up anyway.  She spent hours on the phone today apparently sorting it out and is excused, verbally.  I figure I'll get nabbed soonish.  The courthouse is downtown, I don't particularly relish going downtown.  For many folks in the county it means a car trip and parking, so I should be thankful I don't need that.

I have sat on two juries in Ohio, it was "interesting".
