1980 was bad, in some respects 1981-2 were worse, Reagan's first two years.  I started my first job in 1980 and was glad to have one.  The company didn't lay people off back when if the economy went down, which is one reason I went to work there.

The interest rate on a home loan I applied for in 1981 was 17.5% fixed 30 year.

Carter boasts the all time high Misery Index. (Inflation + unemployment rate)
Incredible look back data

1980
30 yr fixed rate at 13.74%, this would peak in 81 in high teens.  My parents had a 12% on our 1960s era ranch home.

A 30 year Treasury yield was about 11-13% during 1980.

I think the highest mortgage I've ever had is 6%, currently have a 3.25%.
The thing was i still believe there was more opportunity for the average wage earner even then over today.

Good thing home prices were still fairly low back then.

We moved into the house my mom still lives in -- in 1981.  I was starting 1st grade -- turned 50 3 days ago.  LOL

Not sure what interest rate she paid back then?  Maybe I'll ask her.  I know we moved into the "penthouse" neighborhood, as it were, a 3 & 2 -- for 66K.  (It's no penthouse nowadays.)

The closest I ever felt the US was anywhere near a real revolution was 1968.  I was of course "young" then, and naive, but it seemed to me the country was coming apart, and the Russians would obliterate us any day.  We have a lot of issues today of course, but it doesn't "feel" like the country will literally break up or fail (soon anyway).

where were you in 62?

Here are some major events that happened in 1962:
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet Union secretly agreed to place nuclear missiles in Cuba, which led to a confrontation between the U.S. and the USSR. President John F. Kennedy ordered a naval quarantine of Cuba, and the crisis ended when the USSR backed down.

Civil rights
James Meredith became the first African American student at the University of Mississippi, which led to riots and required the deployment of the military to maintain order.

The first Wal-Mart and K-Mart opened.

He left that job to another terrible president - arguably the worst of my lifetime.
We will have to disagree on this one.  He was one of the greats (in my opinion).  Like even the greats he made mistakes but overall did much to correct the problems in this country

I was too young to remember the cuban missle crisis.  I remember in the late 60s my mom put me in the front seat because I had dark curly hair and dark complexion(My brother and sister are both fair), when we were going up through a part of town up to Ohio State Campus.

Happy milestone birthday!

Similar story for me (including the December birthday). My parents moved into their house in 1975. Still there. Because of California property tax laws, their property taxes are incredibly low. But they weren't hit with the really high interest rates. My understanding (but not lived experience) is that when interest rates came back down, nearly everyone refinanced into better terms. Those really high interest rates only lasted a few years (and were brutal).
