It was scary.

Probably not as scary as being a teacher.

What would you want to do now?

Anything quiet.

The problem is I have a very specific degree.  I'm intelligent, don't take time off, and feel obligated to out-effort any problems I face.  But that's not really demonstrable as a new hire.
And worker bee jobs don't pay so great.

If I had any balls, I'd do Whoa Nellie full time, hire someone, advertise, and give that a try.  But I'm sort of burnt out on it.  I got so far behind this fall on orders...and still am.

I'm pretty sure riots are bad, one can see evidence on TV if one doesn't live through one, or drive through an aftermath.  We had a bit of one here, it mostly was looting.

My inference is that protests start during the day usually and morph into lootings and riots later, some of the rioters are just burning stuff because they can, police are overwhelmed.  They seem to burn the neighborhood bodega and Wendy's thus leaving the place worse for wear.   The protesters have long since gone home, mostly.

The riots around us here didn't reach into close proximity, but one bank up the road had boarded up the windows.  I went down stairs to talk with the "concierge" who convinced me he had it under control, I had offered to sit with him.  This place was built back when the area was sketchy and it's like a fortress in some respects.

I'm looking around for something that will still contribute/advance my same retirement system and is quiet and boring.  I just want to be a worker bee, show up, be productive, and go home.  That's not really a thing as a teacher.
sounds like something mind-numbing and boring
sounds good, but after a few years...........

Somebody once told me that State Farm agents have to have a college degree, in something.  Someone else said that isn't true, but I suspect selling insurance is a pretty placid job.  My neice got an expensive degree in psychology from Emory and her first job was ... selling insurance.  She did that until she became a mom, lately she's going into nursing as they are about out of the house.

I doubt many kids think "I wanna sell insurance when I grow up", but many end up doing just that.  I liked State Farm, had a good agent back in the day, my wife had another company that was pretty good, and when we moved here I ended up with Progressive, which so far is OK.  Everything with them is on line which I like.

I ended up rather burnt out at work and found a total sinecure, paid the same, MUCH less actual work involved.  I was lucky, I guess, though I suspect had I stayed put I would have been bumped up another notch, which is really of no consequence now.

I was offered a job sellin for state farm back in the early 90's w/o a degree

sellin insurance can be pretty placid if you take over the client list of someone retiring that was successful

otherwise, it's work to start from scratch - and always motivating to work on commission, if you like more $$$

HR might be a spot. Must be organized. Self-starter. All that stuff. Probably would need to do some continuing ed and get "certified" in some HR things. Being a Notary is helpful.

I can't think of "HR" without recalling my "exit interview".  I wish I had written down notes afterward.  I still recall most of it.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), America’s federal agency for regulating food safety, has recently taken a decisive step against this controversial soda ingredient called BVO, or brominated vegetable oil.

After revoking the registration of BVO, this modified vegetable oil is now officially banned across the country.

The decision came after clear evidence of toxicity emerged from recent studies, making the continued usage of BVO untenable.

James Jones, FDA deputy commissioner for humans foods, announced the significant proposal.

“The proposed action is an example of how the agency monitors emerging evidence and, as needed, conducts scientific research to investigate safety-related questions, and takes regulatory action when the science does not support the continued safe use of additives in foods,” noted Jones.

The story of BVO dates back to the 1930s. As an emulsifying agent, it was added to keep the citrus flavor from floating to the top of soda.

Animal studies have suggested that the compound may slowly accumulate in our fat tissues, preventing iodine from performing crucial functions within our thyroid gland.

This led health authorities worldwide to question the emulsifier’s safety.

In fact, BVO has already been scrapped from the ingredients list in several countries, including India, Japan, and European Union nations.

Even the state of California bid it farewell in October 2022, with the ban expected to be active by 2027.

The FDA had its reservations. In the 1950s, it considered BVO a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) ingredient.

This status was given to items that had either been adequately tested or to those in common use prior to 1958.

The perception changed in the next decade when concerns about potential toxicity arose, leading to a temporary limit on BVO usage, especially in citrus drinks.

However, research in the UK during the 1970s found bromine building up in human tissues, and its high concentrations were linked to heart and behavioral issues in animals.

Generally Recognized as Safe, or GRAS, is a designation used by the U.S. FDA to indicate that a substance added to food is considered safe by experts.

Basically, if something is labeled as GRAS, it means that scientists and researchers agree it won’t harm you when used as intended in our food.

Companies can declare their ingredients as GRAS either by conducting their own research or by relying on the collective knowledge of experts. They can also submit their GRAS determinations to the FDA for review, but it’s not always required.

After several studies, the FDA is finally convinced that BVO should be banned. Companies such as PepsiCo and Coca-Cola Co. have already started the process of phasing out this ingredient from their products over the last decade.

“Over the years many beverage makers reformulated their products to replace BVO with an alternative ingredient, and today, few beverages in the US contain BVO,” said Jones.

Our district has very few jobs at the district office, but I should check there first.  Yes, it would be boring, but I could use a year of boring, if not more.
