I'm sure today Trump's mass deportation force would be able to identify US citizens and avoid deporting them.  Also, the example of Japanese internment camps you mention, those interred were done so by a Democratic administration.  So, no one is perfect.

I meant US citizens saying they're actually illegal immigrants so they can bitch about it later after being deported.  I'm sure that'll happen.

Operation Wetback II won't fly in today's PC culture.  They'll have to come up with something else.  And I'd bet most of those deported will not be Mexican citizens but from South America, Africa, and Asia.

We are not required under law to carry documents of any sort.  I certainly don't carry mine.

My guess as to what happens:

1.  There will be some highly publicized deportations of some individuals, probably more smoke than fire.
2.  There will be efforts to round up more folks that get stymied by court actions (and media coverage, which will be even more harsh).
3.  Congress probably will fund more "border wall".
4.  In four years, we'll still have 20 million or so "undocumenteds" in the US.  Trump et al. will blame "liberals".
5.  Some of the Biden measures will be strengthened to an extent and border crossing figures will drop some.

It will remain an electoral issue in 2028.
