there's usually issues between border states

especially if there's a serious college football rivalry

folks in Nebraska and Cali don't much care about Ohio or TTUN

NYC is very different from upstate.

This was very very eye-opening for me when I got to experience the difference in my mid-20's. Both in culture geologically. And i trust all your takes on locations.. my wife and I still talk about Fog City diner and some of your suggestions when we went to San Fran over a decade ago!

It's probably Clevelanders more than Ohioans. Specifically because hollywood and media and seemingly everyone under the sun thought it's been "cool" to take shots at and shit on Cleveland for a long time because the river caught on fire 100 years ago.

Imagine being happy and proud of where you live and most people that know jack squat about it, shit on it all the time? Or do it about your family.. or you to make it more personal.  Cleveland is full of a lot of gritty, blue collar folk that would rather throw down rather that let be ok for people to run their mouth. A city full of underdogs.. now mix that with having big hearts like so many folks in the midwest and "fierce" is what Clevelanders are.
It's always been a strange state to me. It's a state with a bunch of medium sized cities and none that are a true "draw".

I.e. I don't see putting Cleveland, or Cincinnati, or Columbus on my "must visit for a vacation" list. Just as I don't really have "Indianapolis" or "Omaha" on my "must visit for a vacation" list. But with Ohio, they make it up in volume lol.

To me, it's the opposite of what you usually hear about a place: "It's a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there."

The reason I say it's the opposite is that these medium sized cities seem to have most of the advantages of large cities, without most of the "big city problems" that really big cities have. They're never going to be the "draw" that NY, Chicago, SF, Seattle, Atlanta, etc are. But they also don't have a lot of the downsides that NY, Chicago, SF, Seattle, Atlanta, etc do. It just seems like a nice, albeit a little boring, place to raise a family. And when raising kids, boring and safe isn't exactly a negative lol.

So Ohio to me is the state where I'd probably say: "I wouldn't want to visit, but I might like to live there."

I suspect Georgia is kind of Atlanta and not Atlanta--I bet that's true of a lot of states with a big urban center, and large more rural areas.
This is true, I think, and Atlanta itself has some widely differing areas and cultures.  The metro area is very spread out and diffuse.  Even inside the city limits are areas that are very suburban and even rural.  We were driving back from lunch through some of the "tonier" areas in NW Atlanta, huge trees and amazing mansions for miles and miles, I have a hard time knowing how so many families have the money to buy so many multimillion dollar mansions.

I thought Cincinnati was a very good place to raise kids.  Our school system was quite solid, and diverse.  Taxes were low, crime was low, our area was nice, traffic wasn't bad outside rush hour.  We had a nice house that didn't cost a fortune inside the loop with a decent sized yard.

That's a good take. I've been to Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati. None struck me as great tourist visits, but all of them were nice cities. Columbus, in particular, seemed great, but maybe that's the government nerd in me.

Dayton has the AF Museum, which alone, is worth a visit.

Never been to either one , but as a Texan somebody from Michigan shitting on somebody from Ohio is just plain hilarious.  Because, to me, Ohio =\= Michigan. North, cold, and north.

MDot lives in South Florida. Broward County I believe. Maybe Palm Beach. I don't remember exactly where he is.

I'm on the other side.

This is definitely true of Illinois. It's Chicago and not-Chicago.

Back in the day I used to tell people I wasn't from the Midwest; I'm from Chicago. We just happened to be located there.

But as I traveled more (and lived in more places) I realized that Chicago, for as gigantic a city it is, still has a sort of Midwestern "feel" to it. It's distinctly different from the Bay Area, LA, or Atlanta, where I've lived, and I suspect distinctly different than NYC, DC, Boston, Seattle, Miami, etc. It is more "Midwestern".

Honestly, probably best breakdown i've read on this topic and I'd say spot on. What's most interesting is so many people that come visit here, for either sports or family events, end up saying they never had intended to visit Cleveland, but were very impressed how nice it was compared to their expectation. Definitely much easier to say in the summer months when it's beautiful here. There's a good reason a lot of well to do folks in NE Ohio spend their winter months down in Florida then come right back to the area for spring and summer. Definitely my goal for the future.

Good schooling and communities around me and I'll take cost of living here any day. From someone that lived two year in the most expensive city in the world in Singapore and Cleveland most of my life, i get the allure of the higher end cities if budget was never an issue i can see the action of living in some of those cities or locations, but for my economic standing, the housing and living situation Ohio provides me is well above anything I ever expected in life.

Here's a couple facts. We never ever had a debate about Chris Holtmann's underperformance relative to Ohio State's average, and we aren't having a debate now about how concentrated Democrats are. My point was about huge swathes of Trump voters being surrounded by other Trump voters, which is backed up by the data I provided. If you want to argue with someone about whether cities have more people or whether cities often go Democratic, have at it. But your debate isn't with me.
So you admit you were wrong and Democrats are in fact more concentrated than Republicans.  Good.

The funny thing about Ohio is that while it doesn't have that one vacation destination, it has more cities I would want to visit, and definitely the most cities I would want to live in of any state in the country.  That's kind of the problem, is that everything is so spread among so many places, that there is no one go to place.

My oldest had a travel baseball tournament in Akron last year, and we went to a minor league game in Akron one night, and the NFL Hall of Fame the other.  In two different cities, neither of which would likely rank in the top 5 cities in the state.

Hell, effing SANDUSKY has the best amusement park in the world
