When you look at the polling data, there are a LOT of democrats in demographic/geographic areas where they basically never knowingly interact with a Republican. 
There's probably 5x the square mileage of Rs that never knowingly interact with Ds (and don't like "going to town").

going to the poor portion of the big city.............. F that

nobody wants to see or smell that - certainly don't want to be mugged or shot

I've lived in districts/wards (Milwaukee) where there is almost never a (R) on the ballot for any office, not even R in the primaries.   I think I had the chance to vote for a R exactly two times between 1999-2006.   Same span of time when I had 3 consecutive alderman convicted of felonies.

I've also lived in districts/wards which are (R) 80/20.   I think the zip code/district i'm in now is as close to a coin flip, slight R lean of any district I've lived in before.

"We" tend to live in our own silos, white folks tend to live in areas that are mostly other white folks, the same is true for black folks, Asians, Hispanics, etc.  So, one might also say "I don't know of any black folks, I never see any (unless I go into town).".

It's a bit like travel internationally, if you are able to do it for more than just "seeing the sights", you likely will discover "These folks are pretty much like us.".

Humans are basically about the same, humans also tend to dramaticize differences based on movies, the "news", what their cousin Bill told them, etc.
