I was under the impression that the school lunch deal got nixed because of the large numbers of mom's posting pics of the pathetic looking grub on social media, and complaining that their kids won't eat it, and were going hungry instead.
That is true, and it's mostly due to our kids being used to eating garbage food that their lazy parents feed them at home.

When we were kids, there was no school lunch. Mom packed a healthy lunch. Now we are here.

My mom made my lunch 4 days per week and I got to pick one day where I would buy the school lunch.  I believe it cost $.35 at the time for elementary lunch, maybe up $.50 by the end of junior high.

I usually opted for the rectangle pizza or the enchiladas, which were freaking fantastic.

The problem was they didn't remove the garbage main course, they just added fruits and vegetables as a contingent to qualify for the free or reduced lunch.  And the kids just ate the pizza or sloppy joe or whatever, and threw away the fruit and vegetable.

If RFK can work with the schools to actually make comprehensive healthy choices, that is an absolutely great thing.  Problem is that also raises costs, and increases taxes.

We let our kids pick 2 days a week to buy, and the other 3 days they pack.  Frequently they wind up only buying once, because the lunches we pack are good.  I often make a large enough dinner to plan ahead for their lunches the next day.  This Sunday I made a pork tenderloin, and made 2 lbs of it.  They both ate it plain or on a bun Monday and Tuesday.  But I also get that not everyone can afford to buy extra pork tenderloin, or have the time when they get home from their third shift.  It's a multi facited problem

In Minnesota, the state pays for all K-12 students to get breakfast and lunch, no questions asked. It's cost ~$250 million a year, and it's worth every penny.

Figuring out what kids will eat has always been a challenge. Some districts are better at it than others.

The schools I grew up in and spend time around never overtly discouraged cold lunch, but sure do and did make it hard to get it if you did. No access to lockers, no cold storage, and 30 minutes desk-to-desk to eat. Also, there was only 1 choice for hot lunch every day. That was it or you didn't eat.

Yup, if feeding children isn't a good use of tax dollars, I don't know what a good use is.  I guess tax breaks for the corporations who feed them is?

My kids only get 25 minutes for lunch each day and it's a complete disaster.  They've become very good at packing their own lunches because there's zero chance of getting through the cafeteria line, and then actually eating your meal.  Tons of kids just skip lunch because of this ridiculously tiny amount of time.  If the intention is to force kids to eat more healthfully, it has completely backfired.

Oh and the no-locker thing is a complete disaster as well.  So now the kids have to pack their full lunch, plus a computer, plus charging apparatus, plus whatever books and papers they need for the day.  My 17yo daughter has chronic backpain now, because the school districts refuse to give back lockers ever since COVID.  My PT wife seriously wants to sue the school district.

There was no choice to buy lunch for me until HS, and it was mostly shit, so I made my own, or went out to a local place (we were allowed to leave campus in those days - along with hanging out in the smoking section if you chose).

Yeah we had full off-campus lunch in high school, and I was always working so had my own money to buy lunch.

And yes there was a smoking section at our high school as well, I still can't really believe that, but it was a thing.

We had the option to go out for lunch, but the HS was a 5-8 minute drive from anything and we only had 25 minute lunch periods (plus 5 minute passing period on both ends). So even if you had a car and a license (or knew someone who did), there was nowhere to go.

But my senior year, I ended up taking a zero hour AP Physics class, which meant that it gave me a lot of opportunities for schedule manipulation. So first semester I was out of school at noon every day, and second semester I was out at 1:30 every day but I had an hour and a half lunch. For that I went off campus.

The problem is you can't force kids to eat healthy by just adding healthy options to garbage.  They just throw the healthy options away.

Man, that's tough.  Our kids have always had lockers.  They share lockers in the primary center (K-2), but from 3rd on they have their own lockers.  Granted we live in a small, but growing, district.  That was the case pre, during and post COVID
