Ruthless technicality sounds like verbiage Jim Harbaugh when use in talking about a ref's call in a postgame press conference

Kevin McCarthy brushes off Matt Gaetz's nomination to DOJ
Kevin McCarthy brushes off Matt Gaetz's nomination to DOJ

“Look, Gaetz won’t get confirmed,” he continued. “Everybody knows that.”
McCarthy, a loyal Trump ally while serving in the House, was asked why the former president would bother tapping Gaetz if he knew the Florida Republican couldn’t get confirmed.
“You can talk to [the] president, but it’s a good deflection from others, but it also gives …” McCarthy responded, cutting himself off. “I’ll let it stand at that.”
Pressed again for some insight into Trump’s thought process, McCarthy said, “You’d have to ask the president, but Gaetz couldn’t win in a Republican conference, so it doesn’t matter.”
McCarthy has had a long-standing feud with Gaetz, who spearheaded the effort to oust the California Republican from his leadership post last fall. The former Speaker resigned from the House late last year and has maintained that Gaetz only wanted to remove him over an ethics complaint.

Among the main concerns for some senators likely will be the Department of Justice’s years-long investigation into allegations that Gaetz had sexual intercourse with an underage girl. The investigation was closed last year, and the Florida lawmaker was not criminally charged. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The House Ethics Committee was investigating whether he engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, among other allegations. With Gaetz’s resignation from the lower chamber, the panel no longer has jurisdiction but could still vote to release the report.

McCarthy has a personal axe to grind against Gaetz, but he's right....guy will likely never get confirmed. forget about the Dems, guy has WAY too many enemies within his own party.

Those investigations and reports into his private life really don't mean jack imo. Those investigations and reports were largely politically motivated- and wound up being absolute duds because: zero charges were ever brought forth because: there was zero evidence to support the many outlandish claims about his private life.

he'll never get confirmed simply because most of the republicans in the senate hate his guts and virtually all the democrats do as well.

Heh, I feel bad for y'all, you know I'm a Michigan fan as well.  There is of course some solace in having won the NC last year though, I'd imagine.

The more I read, and think... I hope I'm not wrong...

Trump did Gaetz a favor by giving him a parachute to exit the House before the investigation could be released. Nobody - even Trump - believes this unqualified scumbag of a guy could get confirmed. It's DOA, and I'll be surprised if the nomination isn't withdrawn before it hits the Senate floor.

Now the investigation goes away and Gaetz can go about living life. He's got plenty of money, a great pension, and great healthcare, for life.

Must be nice.

It will be interesting to see who the real pick will be. Texas AG or Florida AG, perhaps?

I posted that earlier.  Gaetz out ahead of the posse.  Trump can say he tried. Johnson jettisons a problem in a deeply red county.  Wouldn't be surprised if this was discussed in Trump and Johnsons meeting

I don't *THINK* so.

I could be wrong.  I'm not sure but this didn't sound right so I did some googling.

According to wiki, Gaetz was born 5/7/82 so he is 42 years old:
  • He was in the Florida HoR for a little over six years (4/13/2020 - 11/8/2016).
  • US HoR for a little under eight years (1/3/2017 - 11/13/2024).

I didn't look up Florida's Pension system but I would assume that six years isn't enough.

According to Wiki, Congressional Pensions:
  • 62 years old with 5 years
  • 50 years old with 20 years
  • Any age with 25 years
With only seven years in the HoR, Gaetz isn't eligible for the second or third and would have to wait 20 years to start collecting the first.

I don't mean this as defending the guy or pity-partying for him.  I only wanted to address it because, AFAIK, Congressional pensions aren't QUITE as generous as you are assuming here.

Eligibility with only five years of service is pretty generous no doubt but it doesn't start until you are 62.
