Yep. My son was trying to decide between physics and engineering, and there tends to be a more immediate job market for a BS in engineering than in physics.

And if you DO want to go further than a BS in engineering while working, most decent companies will pay for or at least contribute to your schooling to do it.

Not in Civil. There is no need for more school after you get a P.E. An MBA would be different.

I started on an MBA and then realized I could teach myself that stuff. Then I started a business a few years later.

Took the queen to see the queen last night at our local theater.

Ina has a new book, her memoir, called Be Ready When The Luck Happens. Was interviewed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

She's truly a fascinating woman. Seems absolutely fearless to try new things, even to the point that when she feels like she's succeeded at something, it gets boring so she wants to jump into something else she's never done before. Called herself an "adrenaline junkie" which is similar to me, and I get it (and I've described myself similarly). Some of my most rewarding professional times have been when I've been offered something new, something that I didn't know whether I could do, and said "yes" because I'd rather be growing into something new than stagnating at something I'm already good at.

That said, I'm not sure her experience translates to "the masses"... She's the type that would succeed at literally anything she wanted. Most of "the masses" barely approach proficiency at anything. Or as Judge Smails said, "well, the world needs ditch-diggers, too."

It was a little weird when she dropped an f-bomb though lol.

I've learned more about very specific things at work, than I did in school.

But in my work I've never learned or used anything from the Mechanics branch of Physics, and yet I absolutely love knowing and understanding the principles of Statics and Dynamics, which I learned in school. That field, combined with some fundamental chemistry, describes so much of how the universe around us works, and I love having learned it, despite never using it in any capacity other than tutoring for my wife many years ago, and now my kids.

Those are just a couple of examples, there are many more from literature, history, government, economics, etc.

Yep. School provides the ability to learn on the job.

The courses in hydraulics and hydrology helped.

Can't do those without Math, physics and mechanics, of course.

I certainly didn't need the fine arts class for my job, but required humanities electives...

I transitioned from organic to polymer, and there was a lot to learn, more than I expected, of a general nature. There was a lot of very narrow stuff involved as well of course. Our main product came from a special kind of emulsion, so I had to learn more about surface chemistry as well. One thing I learned is I didn't know very much at all and still don't. I once chuckled after seeing a seven volume set in the library simply entitled "Water". How could there be thousands of pages written about water???

Huh. I was ignorant, still am. I kind of wish I had more appreciation for art, I like music a lot, but art not so much, even though I try and paint at times (learning how hard that is).

To me, and this is especially true in the modern internet era, it's this... Art is something you can learn about in your own time, as a hobby. It's not something that you NEED to take a class to understand or appreciate. Engineering / hard sciences is something that is VERY difficult to learn about by yourself. Not impossible, of course, because the textbooks are out there.

And this is especially true because unless your goal is to become employed as an art historian or an art dealer, a "layman" level understanding of art is perfectly acceptable. For those of us who our employment is in a field of engineering or the hard sciences, the level of understanding required is higher.

That said, I agree with all of you that we learned much more on the job than we did in school. But it's the schooling that gave us the baseline to be able to understand what we learned on the job in a way that would also be nearly impossible without it.

Not that my advice is worth much, although it’s honestly probably the best piece of advice for anyone, but if you can get some practical skills, go get them.

also, don’t think you can come back to calculus. Once you take a break from that. the knowledge atrophies fast.
