Yeah, I believe that’s a company by company thing.

I always avoided those when I could, granted the cost difference was never THAT much.
I think for us it's a choice between an HMO or a PPO HDHP. Wife will not go HMO, so it is what it is.

But all in all I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some mistaken impression that Obamacare killed off HDHP options. It didn't.

At the time, I was informed that only folks under 25 could have a high deductible plan.  Remember we had to check a box on our 1040 that we had insurance?  At the time, it wouldn't qualify, at least so I was told, and read.  Maybe they changed it.

Very high-deductible plans (which have never been HSA-qualified HDHPs) are no longer allowed under the ACA. So for example, while it was possible to buy a plan with a $15,000 individual deductible[/iurl] before 2014, those plans are no longer sold (the highest allowable out-of-pocket exposure in 2024 is $9,450 for an individual, including the deductible, coinsurance, and any other in-network out-of-pocket costs; this upper limit on out-of-pocket costs will decrease to $9,200 in 2025).1[/sup] But those very-high-deductible plans were never HSA-qualified, even before the ACA, as their out-of-pocket expenses were too high. HSA-qualified high deductible plans have always had upper limits on out-of-pocket exposure, much the way the ACA now imposes such limits on all plans.

So while the ACA prevented new plans from having extremely high deductibles and out-of-pocket exposure, the new guidelines worked well with the regulations for HSAs and HDHPs.

Maybe I had one of these.  I never had any HSA.

That’s an interesting pairing. Is Kaiser the HMO?

Ahh, that sounds possible.

Got it. That makes sense.

So it killed off one type of HDHP, but not all.

I'm in a different situation now of course, but for me, a HDP where I could put savings into an HSA would be attractive.

When I first started work in 1980, there were no copays and no monthly fees for health insurance for regular doctor visits.

Yep.
That makes sense.

That company is in a weird space. I feel like growing up in Ca, everyone groused about it. But it’s also roundly considered among the top large companies for health insurance customer experience.

What does “monthly fees for health insurance for regular doctor visits” mean?

A deduction in the paycheck for health insurance.  For us, it was free for a few years, and then they started charging us for it, and we had copays.

Ahh, the company just paid it. Changing social norms, I suppose.

I'll agree with that

neither the Obamacare or the work on the wall affected my life
