This sounds like someone needs help from the government to protect them from the free market.

but thankfully, the government is here to help.
so you're cool with a titty bar being built right next door to your house and your kids? got it.

Uh, wut?

The free market allows me to buy commercial and the government changes it to residential, destroying my investment?

In what world is that help?

I think the federal government is the only entity that could loosen up building restrictions nationwide. I also think the housing shortage is mostly caused by government regulation at multiple levels.
yeah, it's not.

It’s only commercial because of the government, right? Without government help, it’s just land.

I would not say that. Regulations very often force developers to walk away from projects. Like 50 percent of the projects I work on.

One factor in the housing shortage that makes a lot of sense is elderly couples not willing to downsize for obvious reasons.  My realtor friend was talking about this, he has clients who want to downsize, but basically can't.  It has naught to do with zoning.  Obviously, there are financial factors for younger couples that zoning won't and can't help.  This is why the couples around us are renting at $3 K a month, broadly speaking.  They have plenty of income, but can't manage a house.
That isn't an issue at all if more houses are being built at a pace that basically matches demand.

He's saying government restriction is what denies your investment. Obama proposes doing away with those restrictions and then some here are lampooning him as saying the "government is here to help."

Zoning is done by experts at the local level, as the result of comprehensive planning with heavy input from the people who live in the community.

Wouldn’t be happy about it, but I would be skeptical about the government telling my neighbor what to do with their own land.

I'm am chuckling at some folks on FB who claim "Communism hasn't been done the right way before."  Um, yeah, I agree.

What is the "right way"?

Zoning should be local.  I'd like the boards not to be controlled by developers, but I don't know how to do that in small towns.

Interestingly, there is a strip about 1.5 miles north of us, the liquor store I like is part of it.  There must be 7-9 strip bars in the strip, maybe more.  But, also, there are two large new apartment complexes that have sprung up and one more is about to be completed.  My GUESS is the strip clubs are going to get replaced with something else, probably apartments.

This area years ago was quite sketchy.

It is a major major issue whether new houses are being built or not.  New houses have nothing to do with why couples stay in a large house.

This thing is laugably entertaining.

What Obama wants is low income housing being built in ritzy suburbs.

This area is really prime for development, which is why it's happening of course (somehow developers have traversed zoning laws).  MARTA has plans to build a new station about where that Buzzi place is listed.  As I mentioned, there are some pretty scuzzy properties along Piedmont that some developer will buy up eventually.  There is a high priced residential area just south.

Maybe I should buy a strip club.  (How can strip clubs survive today?)
