We feel safe here. Sometimes we don't even lock our doors.
I haven't locked our doors in the 31 years we have lived in this house. As a matter of fact, I don't even know where the keys are. We also leave our keys in our vehilces while parked in the driveway or the garage. Never had a problem. We leave those things unguarded even when we leave for a week or two on vacation. It has never been an issue.

Note that EVERYONE in our neighboorhood is well armed and looks out for each other. I have called when an unrecognized vehicle pulls into my neighbors driveway while he is away to confirm that it is someone that is supposed to be there. He does the same for me.

Also note that I live in a rural communitee. We simply don't have the problems that those in urban communitees have. If I moved 7 miles up the road into the closed large town/small city, I would NOT be able to leave my valuables unlocked as I do now. Many of my friends that live there are afraid to leave anything not locked up. I cannot live like that.

Yes, crime is down in Chicago for the reasons I stated. Cops are not doing their jobs and there are less of them. Their hands are tied, and they are neutered.

Congrats, I guess?
Homicides are down because cops aren't doing their jobs?

"Chicago police say nearly all categories of crime declined in the city in the first three months of the year. "

Must be part of the vast conspiracy
I guess if crime is not reported, it didn't happen. Good to know.

Homicides would get reported, not always as a crime of course.  They are a decent indicator of crimes.  I would not the FBI changed how crimes are reported and some urban areas aren't reporting their numbers.  I'd think "violent crimes" get reported, assaults, rapes, in many cases, the rate probably has not changed.  I can understand why some rapes are not reported.

Please don’t take this as anything but an observation about that newspaper’s categorization, but it feels like they’re tagging some non-crimes under “crime.”

I guess “unfortunate deaths” need some place tk be filed.

It's a liberal news outlet. The Chicago Trib has also moved to that space.

Feels like cope rather than facts. Though everyone overrates the government when it comes to crime rates, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

I’m unclear what that has to do with what I wrote.

This man seems to undercut his own point when he writes, “as is almost always the case with transparently political articles, the report is more about helping Democrats overcome an election issue hurdle than providing you with the context that’s most important.”

When the conservative radio gabber is writing something like this, it seems like it’s gonna be transparently political. His job is to be that way. And he’s trying to help with an election hurdle. So I’m skeptical why I should believe that he’s providing unbiased context.

In the larger sense, it seems fine to say these stats are untrustworthy. But if that’s the case, not much reason to trust them when they say crime went up.

Homicides are down because cops aren't doing their jobs?
Are you actually this dense?

Yes, Homicides in Chicago were down in 2022 and again in 2023 but that is a ridiculously low bar because homicides were so high in 2020 and 2021.

From 2012-2014 homicides in Chicago hovered around 445. Then Ferguson happened and as the anti-cop reaction to that spread North to Chicago, homicides spiked with an incremental increase of 300+ deaths in 2016 as compared to 2012-2014.

Fortunately that settled down and by 2019 Chicago's homicides were almost back down to 2012-2014 levels.

Then the evil a-holes that run the media decided to make a martyr out of a life-long criminal and addict who died with a lethal level of Fentanyl in his blood and homicides spiked again, this time to nearly double the 2012-2014 levels.

The reduction that you are celebrating here reduced 2023 homicides to a level of "only" 39% over 2012-2014 as compared to 60% over 2012-2014 in 2022, 81% over 2012-2014 in 2021, and 74% over 2012-2014 in 2020.

Two more reductions of that size and we'll be all the way back to where we were a dozen years ago.

So essentially your argument is:
"My side's policies are so lethal that they got an extra 1,872* people killed in Chicago over the last nine years but the worst is behind us and homicides are falling now so yay!"

*The 1,872 is total homicides each year from 2015-2023 less the 2012-2014 average of 443.67 so for example:
 • 2020 homicides were 804 less the prior average of 443.67 is an extra 360.3 people killed due to asinine liberal policies.

Oh, yes.

I meant the link was to “crime” stories. And some of those were sort of crime adjacent.
