I am a bit fascinated with the point made above that two intellligent learned people can disagree on politics to such a degree. One might suppose that at a given level of intelligence and learning folks would coalesce on a group of basic concepts as being "the best".
The other possible answer to this is that these two folks really agree on most things and sensationalize a few areas where they have somewhat different opinions on things. Take taxes for example, I can see how one might think a tax on the wealthy is a good idea and the other might disagree, it's a technical matter really. On immigration, kind of the same thing, there is an argument to be made for immigration, even of the "illegal" type, being good for the country overall.
I try and see the "good" in both positions, if they are reasonable. And I try and remember that my own ideas have evolved over the years, some more "liberal" and some more "conservative".
