I don't think he can end his war practicably speaking.  He would lose considerable "face", and hence power.  I think he's motivated by "assuring his place in history" as much as anything, the man who "restored" the USSR.  And his "proposal" for a cease fire with status quo isn't acceptable to Zelensky.  I think it will be, in time, Ukraine isn't going to regain any appreciable territory.

It's prime campaigning season now, and the lines are not really moving, everyone seems to be hunkered down.

I'd be down with about half of those.

He's backing himself into a corner entirely of his own making.  He could end the war he himself started, at any time.  It's the one thing that is entirely within his own power to do.
Most people realize/understand that - he can't or won't and prolly would try to take as many with him as possible if going down himself

I haven't read the list, but I disagree with some of it, and some of it is OK with me.

No smoking inside, anywhere, in my view.

And I smoke cigars - outside only. For now, at least. Probably not much longer.

I remember the first time I went to Milwaukee and ended up at a smoking bar. California had band that at some point when I was a kid and Madison had an early citywide ban. I can’t believe y’all live like that. (I did later, live in a town with several smoking bars, and I went to them a lot, and they were kind of holes.)

I know. When Ohio enacted their ban it was lifechanging, in a great way.

Wisconsin's ban came in 2008. Illinois was earlier than that. Maybe 2005. Chicago and some burbs were earlier.

the Ex-wife hated it and would many times break the rule

well, she still does today

The indoor smoking ban in Minneapolis came about a year before the rest of the state. I remember going to a bar in rural MN during this time and having my sinuses seize up due to the smoke.

Second the motion of life-changing for the better.

I remember when restaurants would have a third of the tables as the smoking section, and 2/3rds not.  Huh.

I used to play duplicate bridge in a basement room where nearly every player smoked.  They had a rule that you could only smoke on alternate rubbers.  I'd come home smelling awful.  I can't tolerate even a slight whiff these days, I've become hypersensitive to it.

These vape things at least don't spread smoke around much.

Oh, stop. Just be transparent.

...

Do you really think those are things that appeal to people who read and understand the world? Even you know better than that.
So this is a downside of politics, everything just gets back to a big long list of demonizing one's opponents.

I didn't mention the lady at all. I pointed out that if these people don't watch TV or read newspapers, then the idea of the liberal media giving marching orders is kinda silly. It's a contradiction. Now is it a contradiction created by a cheap insult? Sure is. And thus, I applied a bit of sass.

Now this overall makes a classic mistake of imagining that reasonable, smart people can't disagree. Perhaps that's the issue we have today. But there's some cranky lib out there, probably as smart as you, who can pop out some list of demonized takes about republican policies and say "No smart person could support all those bad ideas." And in some ways, you'd both be right. If both sides were fully into the grotesque pictures of what their opponents thought, that would be very bad.
