Upthread
@betarhoalphadelta and
@longhorn320 had a discussion around "independents" and I wanted to chime in but without re-posting Beta's extensive charts and whatnot.
First off I want to address the definition of "Independents" because I think it is important that we all be on the same page so that we understand each other.
A lot of people are "independents" only because they refuse to officially "join" a party. I deal with this. Look at
@OrangeAfroMan , he has said on here that he isn't a "Democrat", he probably thinks of himself as an "independent" but I've seen enough of his posts to say that there is probably a 0.00% likelihood that he'll ever vote for a Republican for any national office. I think that
@847badgerfan said the same thing but coming at it from the opposite side.
From a polling/analysis perspective Fro is a D. Period, full stop.
Nationally we (Americans) are just VERY hesitant to "join" anything. This is a problem for service clubs, country clubs, and Political Parties, read Bowling Alone if you want to know more.
There are precincts where 80% of the voters are "independent" but the precinct ALWAYS votes 80+% for one party. They can call themselves "independent" all they want but if they vote D every election they are a D and if they vote R every election they are an R for polling/analysis.
Only somewhat related, but the lack of people voting in Primaries is one of the major causes of the problems in our Country today.
