There is some difficulty in relaying news that quickly. You don't want to report Trump had been shot without some sort of confirmation of it. Feels like the kind of things no one would care about 20 years ago, but now when we have the news seconds after it happens you get stuff like that.

I find it weirder that this shooter was a gun nut that had Trump signs in his yard.

In the 16 years from 2009-2024 we have run deficits of >5% nine times (2009-2012 and 2020-2024).

Yeah, and I'd want to look into that. Illinois is probably an outlier because the Chicago metro is SO huge relative to anything in the Midwest that it might slightly defy regional trends. Denver and Phoenix are rapidly growing. Not 100% sure on the growth rate in Atlanta but it's the regional "attractor" for jobs IMHO. 

I think those other states you mention are all sorta the opposite. Isn't much of the "rust belt" hollowing out? Populations stagnant to declining? Potentially de-urbanizing as people in cities are leaving for better economic opportunities in the South / West, while the rural population, especially farming, remains right where they are? 

When I think of Ohio, I think of a state where everyone who lives there loves it because there's no such thing as a "big city". There are a lot of medium-sized cities, all large enough to give people a wide range of experiences but none so large that they're anything like an NYC or LA or Chicago or Atlanta. You get all the advantages of cities without their worst excesses. But even then it's discussed upthread that Cinci and Cleveland are sort of hurting, while someplace with a major university / knowledge hub like Columbus is the one growing. 

I get a similar sense with Wisconsin, where it's a more heavily rural state with Milwaukee which is a minor city. Detroit used to be a major city, but it's dead. Pittsburgh seems to be declining, but I'm sure Philly is still more healthy being close to the power centers of the East. I can't really tell re: MSP, it seems like a city that punches above its weight class but I'm not sure how much it dominates the state overall like Chicago or Atlanta or Phoenix or Denver does. 

I dunno... You guys are the ones that live there. If you can offer more color, let me know.

there are a lot of weird things in regards to the shooting and attempted assassination. not much of any of it makes sense right now.

I am going to opine on something here, and I’m sure it will appear to be biased, but honestly don’t mean it to be that way.

I agree that both parties fail, miserably, usually, and delivering what they “promise”.   

Politics in this country seem to have a natural pendulum which swings the other way when it gets too far one way 

I would suggest it is far left now, and will swing back to the right a bit. 

People are kind of filled with what they perceive the current administration has brought them. ( I say perceived because I don’t think it’s fair to tag the current administration with all of this.)

-You have pretty much an open border and people coming in Un vetted from approximately 180 different countries, including Russia, China, Iran, and all of the south American countries.  Some of them are being caught, committing, violent crimes, and several of them have been caught as repeat offenders

-You have an environment that is clearly soft on crime, a defund, the police atmosphere, and victims being treated worse than criminals, especially in the big cities

-Inflation and gas prices
- war on multiple fronts
-Men dominating women’s sports on numerous fronts.
-DEI run amok.  Meritocracy under assault
-Squatters having more rights than homeowners.
-Parents having less then school boards in a number of locations and drag queens coming to visit third graders
-Patriotism, displaying the American flag, being looked down on and ridiculed
-fentanyl coming across the border illegally and Kellie 100,000 people or more every year
-A complete lack of transparency by the media and government. Gaslighting galore, which always eventually gets exposed as false.

If this election moves toward the right, and I’m not 100% sure that it will, those are many of the reasons why. 

For the record, my position on abortion and guns is definitely left of center as well as my position on LGBTQ.  I am probably right off center just about everything else.  Full disclosure.

Minimal state regulation, people figure out stuff for themselves.
