OAM is definitely my Secretary of Education-- he's convinced there are simple solutions to everything so I'm gonna let him have at it.

MDot is my secretary of Homeland Security.

A family member visited Ellis Island a few months back. They pointed out the anti-immigrant complaints back then were ... basically the same as they are now.

Figured that one would go that way. Speaks to the sort of intractable nature of that issue. In some ways it makes it harder to solve and sets up a deeply inefficient public dole system. Though the sleeping in your car part frankly seems a bit too far to me. 

I saw an interesting experiment someone was doing where they bought land under overpasses and filled it with little shed-type things. Big enough to sleep in and store one's meager property. They have locks, which provides some safety. I think they have some kind of communal restroom/shower situation. 

A charitable solution to be sure. Not one that truly sets people on the road to normalcy, but probably a much more workable half measure for the smaller portion of the homeless population that drive most people's angst about it.

This is true about the complaints, but today is not SSDD.

Those immigrants came here to work, get educated, become productive citizens, learn the language, and assimilate to our country. 

Now you have to press "1" for English.

Back then, many changed their surnames to not sound Polish, Italian, etc. My mother's side actually did this (Louakacevicz became Locus. The Sicilians and Germans kept their surnames - LaSpisa and mine. I don't know what my Dad's mother's last name was.)

There we no handouts when they arrived. They didn't bring drugs. They were subject to health exams. They were not given rooms in 5* hotels. I could go on. I know all about it. None of my grandparents were born here.

Definitely NOT SSDD.

I think plenty of folks come here to work hard and become productive. I think the getting education and language learning goals in the 1880s are probably overstated.

They brought plenty of criminals, and we lived, somehow.

But if the answer is to no give them hotel rooms and just let them make their way, you won't get much argument. If we want to rollback to 1880s levels of paperwork, we should be good.

Edit: Wait, Sicilians? Like the ones who came in with waves of criminals?

This wouldn't deal with that. This would be public property, whereas campuses are a gray area between public and private. 

I'm not sure I understand the second question.

If I'm sleeping outside I won't be arrested.

If a homeless person says, Hey, I'm not homeless, I'm visiting from out of town and just couldn't afford a motel tonight.

The case was about a suit against a town in Oregon that banned sleeping in public, on the theory that if there are not enough shelters for the homeless people to sleep in, it is cruel and unusual to outlaw sleeping in public.

No, you’ll be arrested too (well, first ticketed, then arrested if it persists). It’s about camping. 

but if you don’t have a home, you don’t have a way to avoid being ticketed and then arrested. Other than letting the government force you to move somewhere else, which is usually the point.

We have public camping bans in our city.  Anyone caught sleeping/camping on public lands that are not designated as a campsite, can be ticketed and/or arrested.  This is true in many counties/municipalities, though not everywhere of course.
