Trump appeals strongly to about 30% of the population.  With many other candidates running, no one could muster any level of competition, given that 30% if about 60% of folks who might vote in a Republican primary.  Somewhere around 30% also loathe and fear Trump, leaving that 40% in the middle who likely don't care for either choice.

I don't understand the appeal of sending out a convicted felon that has cost Republicans control of the White House and both houses of Congress, and is bleeding out the RNC to pay his attorneys. But that's just me.
