So quarterbacks handle the ball more than any other position (not counting the center) and impact the game more than any other position. The NFL has a hard salary cap, which means the talent on most teams is roughly equal.  NOPE
Therefore, having the best player at the most important position is the clearest path to having a good team.  Maybe, if each position was in a vacuum.  But the QB relies on the others in order for him to play his best.
A hard cap means teams spend roughly the same amount of money.  But as there are very team-friendly contracts and extremely team-unfriendly contracts, the variation in quality of front offices is substantial.

Sure, they can do a bit with that. But the other side is guys can get cut with no penalty outside of of the cap, it's pretty easy to fill out a team. It's also somewhat difficult to really build a team over time, because you only have limited player control for a few years. So you have to pick your spots on what to prioritize, which means nearly everyone prioritizes the most important position.

@betarhoalphadelta made a similar comment a page back. You two may be right. To the extent that you are, I think it is extremely shortsighted on the part of the teams because a "boring" 11-6 team is a lot more fun to watch than an "exciting" 6-11 team.

Largest WNBA crowd in 17 years—20,333—sees Fever beat Mystics, 85-83.
Caitlin Clark makes 7 threes, scores 30 points, adds 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals.
The two teams are a combined 3-20.

What is their protocol? When circumstances indicate that teams are comparable, committee members must consider:
  • Championships won
  • Strength of schedule
  • Head-to-head competition
  • Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory)
  • Other relevant factors such as unavailability of key players and coaches that might have affected a team's performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance
These factors are not weighted, and an individual committee member can place a greater value on one factor than the person sitting next to them might.

Yes, they MUST.  Of course, they could discard any of that after consideration.  I think it's natural to consider those things, and they probably also consider MoV without saying as much.  I'd certainly view a close loss as being different from a blow out loss.  A true top ten team shouldn't lose by 40, ever.  They might get clipped by a 7-5 kind of team on the road by 3.

my point is that there is no protocol

why state that there is?

Well, they list criteria, which can be ignored, to make things "seem" more quantitative and ordered.

It makes some folks nod their heads, and others disagree, when in fact I agree with you, it's just words.

they're gonna pick who they wanna pick

whether they are influenced or swayed by networks or the 2 big conferences or other outside forces is the question

I find it "funny" how public attention gyrates from one personnage to the next like a cue ball.  Right now I see report after report about a lady basketball player on a bad team as if it's "news".  Once it was the "Kardashians" or somesuch, and then it migrates along to others.  We get reports on AOC and MTG pretty often, but at least they are in Congress (to my dismay).  Then it was, and is, all about that female singer lady dating some football dude.

The "news" is about 90% garbage in my view.  At least I can read what I want on line and not watch them drivel on about whoever on TV.

I see the occasional interview with someone our protesting being asked questions and they don't seem to know the first thing about the issues, but perhaps most do and they only show the ignorant ones.

Of course, and they can always "justify" the picks based on the listed criteria after the fact.  It's circular.

It really only matters for seeding, and probably who gets the 11 and 12 positions, which are probably meaningless anyway.
